Publisher's Summary

In one of his most enlightening works, C.S. Lewis shares his ruminations on both the form and the meaning of selected psalms. In the introduction he explains, "I write for the unlearned about things in which I am unlearned myself." Consequently, he takes on a tone of thoughtful collegiality as he writes on one of the Bible's most elusive books.

Characteristically graceful and lucid, Lewis cautions us that the psalms were originally written as songs that should now be read in the spirit of lyric poetry rather than as doctrinal treatises or sermons. Drawing from daily life as well as the literary world, Lewis begins to reveal the mystery that often shrouds the psalms.

Just excellent!

This is not a formal “introduction to the Psalms”. Rather, it is as exposition of aspects of the Psalms which C.S. Lewis found especially difficult or important. To listen to this great mind and heart struggle with issues of such spiritual and eternal consequence is an honour in itself. His conclusions are profound to say the least. What a treat, although a word like treat does not seem serious enough. What a nourishing feast is better.

Great Meditations

This commentary from C. S. Lewis will get you thinking. This is certainly not an exhaustive commentary on the Psalms, nor is it very systematic in its approach. However it offers an excellent springboard to meditating on the Psalms both as a whole and individually.
