About this listen
Hounded by the tabloid media, driven from his self-made sanctuary at Neverland, Michael Jackson spent his final years moving from city to city, living with his three children in virtual seclusion - a futile attempt to escape a world that wouldn’t leave him alone. During that time, two men served as the singer’s personal security team: Bill Whitfield, a former cop and veteran of the security profession, and Javon Beard, a brash, untested rookie, both single fathers themselves.
Stationed at his side nearly 24/7, their job was to see and hear everything that transpired, and to keep everyone else out, making them the only two men who know what 60 million fans around the world still want to know: What really happened to the King of Pop?Driven by a desire to show the world who Michael Jackson truly was, Whitfield and Beard have produced the only definitive, first-person account of Michael Jackson’s last years: the extreme measures necessary to protect Jackson and his family, the simple moments of happiness they managed to share in a time of great stress, the special relationship Jackson shared with his fans, and the tragic events that culminated in the singer’s ill-fated comeback, This Is It. The truth is far more compelling than anything you’ve yet heard.
An indispensable piece of pop-culture history, Remember the Time is the story of a man struggling to live a normal life under extraordinary circumstances, the story of a father fighting to protect and provide for his children.
Remember the Time is the book that dismantles the tabloid myths once and for all to give Michael Jackson back his humanity.

Bodyguard Stans
While it was interesting to hear what it was like behind the scenes working for MJ and dealing with MJ's daily routines. There isn't much in the book that isn't already known. I didn't appreciate the slight Prince jab one of the bodyguard told. It made me think, "Well, at least Prince paid his employees and security on time!" As these bodyguards said in this book. They would go months with no pay causing their homes heating or electricity to be shut off and lived on their $75 daily perdium, because MJ didn't have his business affairs in order or the right people to execute simple business tasks such as payroll. While MJ sat with hundreds of thousands of cold cash in the house and they'd watch MJ spend millions yearly on frivolous extravagant whims. The bodyguards because they are huge fans of MJ, excuse MJ of ownership, responsibility, and failings. This is a common trait of Michael Jackson fans, stans, and fanatics. They excuse MJ of any fault. I'm a fan myself, but I have the nuance and open perspective to be realistic in my view for MJ as a very complicated, flawed human being. He is The King Of Pop, but he is no saint and he isn't a perfect angel.

I wish every book was like this
Full disclosure, I'm not an MJ fan and like a lot of people I assumed he was a mutant of fame and enablement, and who-knows-what.
But through all these years, his friends and acquaintances have always described him exceedly well, as sensitive, good natured, and a devoted father. Not just a few loyal defenders, you understand -- everyone.
I began to suspect I was the one with more to learn about this man.
This book is by MJ's Vegas security detail, covering the year or two between Jackson's return to America and when he began to prepare for the London show. It is a time of profound uncertainty for the little family, and these two personnel became stabilizing forces for them. It is expertly voiced by professional actors, which frequent listeners will appreciate. With these guys you float along as if carried by a river current.
Please don't miss out on this one.
