About this listen

A riveting account of the birth and remarkable evolution of the most important development in entertainment since television, Replay is the ultimate history of video games. From its origins in the research labs of the 1940s to the groundbreaking success of the Wii, Replay sheds new light on gaming's past. Along the way it takes in the spectacular rise and fall of Atari, the crazed cottage industry spawned by the computers of Sir Clive Sinclair, Japan's rapid ascent to the top of the gaming tree, and the seismic impact of Doom. Replay tells the sensational story of how the creative vision of game designers across the globe gave rise to one of the world's most popular and dynamic art forms. Based on extensive research and more than 140 interviews, Replay includes insights from video game legends such as Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, Will Wright - the creator of The Sims , Doom designer John Romero, and Hironobu Sakaguchi of Final Fantasy fame. A masterpiece of history that I missed as societal development!

This is a spectacular, incredibly researched, and very well developed book! I was never a video gamer, and so was skeptical of what this book would provide me with… It blew my mind! Basically every major brand, and name of computer people from start ups throughout the 1960s to current day, and how hames relate to the entire functioning of our current society,… Is all contained within this book. Read this book with your ears, to discover the pleasures and awarenesses of societal development, business, economics, politics, The game that Steve Jobs played that led to the creation of MS-DOS,and the world of games and fun – everything that I didn’t know I missed out on, but now can go hunting down to relive again! An awesome auditory adventure! A feast for the ears, and that video screen of memories inside your head!!! 12/10

Extensive but dry history of video games

A comprehensive look at the history of video games. Perfect for first-timers on the subject. Possibly patchy and repetitive for those who have read up on the subject before, a lot of popular anecdotes and stories told before in other books, docs and video essays. Still enjoyable and offers up some new insights. Narrator was great. A worthwhile listen overall.
