About this listen

Madeline MacDonald has been a victim of her stepbrother's cruelty ever since her parents' death in a fire two years ago. Forced into a betrothal to a man she hates, her only way out is to escape to a convent. Laird Alexander Grant is honor bound to rescue Maddie after seeing the bruises on her face. What he doesn't realize is that once he holds the beaten lass in his arms, his heart will never be the same. He vows revenge for the abuse she was forced to endure and yearns to make the sweet woman with an iron will his, but can he help her fight the demons in her mind left behind by her abusers' horrid treatment?

Story of bravery in the face of cruelty

I hated the character Kenneth and waited until the end for justice. So sad that even today this debauchery continues. Good there is good men like Alex and brave women

Disappointed

There was very little character growth. The heroine remained a damsel in distress the entire book.

The power of love

Alex never gave up on Maddie. He gave her the time she needed to heal. She had been through so much. In that time in history women had no say no power and were often married off for money power or land or just to get rid of them girls were worthless. But some highlander such as the Grant clan treasure their females. Vow to protect and love for ever.

Good effort for first book.... but.....

The positives is that the writer didn't litter the story with adverbs or pages of backstory.

I think the story needed a professional structural edit. all of the story dimensions are there but they needed to be fleshed out.... more space for the back and forth of character development. Right now the heroine comes off as two dimensional because the pacing for her story arc is too fast. She needed more time (words) and words to heal, learn, fall in love and grow.

Alex has his moments but again, he isn't full fleshed out. And he needed more to do....more time to come across the anger of his people, conflict with his brothers and so on.

Things are too easily resolved in this book. The heroine overcomes years of abuse and a rape within 3 weeks. That's just not plausible.

It's the writers first book and I applaud her courage to publish. if she reads this, I suggest she add more subplots and depths to the characters and work on her prose to liven up both dialogue and descriptions.

For a reader...... listen snippets to her more recent works to see if you like them.
