About this listen
Eyes of a Child
Ricardo Arias is found dead in his apartment, the gun that killed him wedged in his mouth. The physical evidence might confirm suicide, but there is no doubt that it strongly suggests murder. The police investigation quickly uncovers a maze of emotion and conflict that surrounded the dead man in the last months of his life: an estranged wife, Terri Peralta; an ugly custody fight over their six-year-old daughter, Elena; threats of extortion; accusations of adultery; and sexual abuse of the child. And then the police uncover a murder suspect. He's Terri's new lover, Christopher Paget, a man of wealth and prominence, an extremely high-profile San Francisco defense attorney. Now, defense attorney becomes defendant. Paget's defense attorney works desperately to raise reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury, even as Paget and Terri struggle to preserve their future and that of their cherished children.
Degree of Guilt
Mary Carelli, one of the most powerful women in TV journalism, is charged with the murder of America's most eminent novelist, Mark Ransom. As her trial unfolds Mary's lawyer, Christopher Paget, willl be surprised by Mary's secret motive for murder...by evidence that Mary is lying...and by an enigmatic judge with an agenda of her own.
The Lasko Tangent
William Lasko is a self-made multimillionaire who's got an eye for wealth and influence, the ear of the president, and a talent for using both to get what he wants. The Economic Crimes Commision wants the corrupt Lasko brought down and Chrisopher Paget is picked for the job. To gather enough evidence to nail Lasko without alienating the White House, Paget's got to go by the book. But Lasko makes his own rules and eliminating enemies is his golden one.

"Decent" Abridgment
This audiobook includes three 'Christopher Paget' novels - involving events in the trial lawyer/high-profile defense attorney's imaginative career & life:
• 'Eyes Of A Child' finds Paget himself on trial for the murder of his girlfriend's ex-husband (with his son accused of molesting the woman's daughter, too).
• 'The Lasko Tangent' (starting at Chapter 36) is a politically-tinged thriller involving a criminal industrialist and the murder of multiple witnesses. It's definitely the weakest of this triad of stories, but the first in the series.
• Chapters 40-43 cover 'Degree Of Guilt' - introducing 'Mary Carelli' (a 'Barbara Walters'-clone celebrity reporter and mother of Paget's son), accused of murdering a prominent author in a sensational ("TMZ-worthy") case driven by serial rapes.
Richard North Patterson is a little bit too focused on sex as a plot device for my tastes.. but these books are a brilliant mix of twisty-turny Mystery-Thriller and Courtroom Battle/Drama. The writing is unimpeachable.
Less fortunately, Random House Audio Inc. abridge these stories to the bare minimum required to tell the stories - interfering with the pacing for which North Patterson is rightly renowned.
Reader Ken Howard narrates without flaw.. but the recording also includes some off-putting musical emphases that add to my impression of a product exhibiting questionable editorial decisions (such as "Why not present them in chronological order?").
Bottom Line: This collection of severely shortened Christopher Paget tales merits 7.5 stars out of 10. This was an entertaining way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons, but you are much better off investing the time (and Credits) on the full-length versions of these books. If you do decide to try this one, start at Chapter 36, and listen to chapters 1-35 last.
