About this listen

Three 20-somethings are all that stands between an otherworldly threat and the survival of Earth in the latest thrill ride by Dennis E. Taylor, author of the Audible and New York Times best-selling Bobiverse series.

Jack Kernigan is having a bad day...a bad year...a bad life. After being booted out of MIT, he’s back in his Ohio hometown, working for the family business, facing a life of mediocrity. Then one day, out on a delivery, his truck hits...something. Something big...something furry...something invisible. And, it turns out, something not of this Earth.

Fate can play funny tricks. Which is why Jack suddenly finds himself the planet’s best hope to unravel a conspiracy of galactic proportions that could spell the end of the human race. All Jack and his best friends, Natalie and Patrick, have to defeat an alien threat is their wits, a lot of coffee, and a rather snippy AI named Sheldon. Plus, their own spaceship.

After all, if you’re going to rescue the world, the least you can get out of it is your own spaceship.

Exactly what you expect from Taylor.

Dennis Taylor’s stories certainly start to blend together when you read enough of them (coffee addiction, somewhat static female auxiliary character held in high regard, similar mannerisms from the protagonist) but the story is still engaging. The writing style dips a toe into young adult/incel tropes a bit more than I like, but there is still a charm to it.

Ray Porter is a fantastic narrator and comes through with his usual professionalism and polish.

More fun than serious

It's more fun than serious, along the realism level of the Bobiverse series. Ray Porter is, as always, fantastic.

A fun short novel

A fun short novel by Dennis E. Taylor. Not nearly as good as the bobiverse series, and prone to trope-itis, but don't take it too seriously and its a fun listen for audio-book and chill. Ray Porter really brings the narrative to life as usual, great job!

Good listen

Very like the bob series. The same narrator adds to the feel of the work. It’s a little juvenile but honestly that adds to the appeal.

Loved this book!

Sheldon, the sentient AI was an awesome character. I found myself laughing out loud on my morning walks. Performance was what you’d expert from Ray Porter- flawless.

Overall lighthearted and entertaining

Nice little story, does have potential for a sequel, but it’s really not extraordinary. I still enjoyed it though!

Skippy meets John Cleese

For anyone familiar with the expeditionary force series this much the same and every bit as good as that first book, this could easily be a series also. All and all well worth the credit, just wish this Canadian author could choose a Canadian location for a book next time :)

Another Dennis E. Taylor story that didn’t disappoint! Can’t wait for his next book. And Ray Porter is my favourite actor.
