About this listen

What did the president know? And when did she know it?

For the members of SEAL Team Six, it was a rare mission ordered by the president, monitored in real time from the Situation Room. Houthi rebels in Yemen had captured an American journalist and a member of the Saudi royal family. Their executions were scheduled for Easter Sunday. The SEAL team were to break them out. But when the mission results in spectacular failure, the finger-pointing goes all the way to the top.

Did the president play political games with the lives of US service members?

Paige Chambers, a determined young lawyer, has a very personal reason for wanting to know the answer. The case she files will polarize the nation and test the resiliency of the Constitution. The stakes are huge, the alliances shaky, and she will be left to wonder if the saying on the Supreme Court building still holds true.

Equal justice under law

It makes a nice motto. But will it work when the defendant is also one of the most powerful people on the planet?

Great Book

One can easily tell that author Randy Singer is both a lawyer and a Christian pastor. The book is unusually heavy on case law, precedent, and legal rulings (betraying his vocation).. but also sprinkled with frequent prayers and communions with God (at least among the good guys).
His characters are somewhat two-dimensional and the legal proceedings show a bit too much "inside baseball" reasoning (they get pretty technical at times).. but the research feeding the story (US mid-east policies, for example), vocabulary/prose, pacing, and plotting are all praiseworthy. Singer also writes the most sensitive portrayal of Gold Star Family sacrifices that I have ever encountered. I found myself with tears in my eyes.

As to presentation: Reader Carla Mercer-Meyers impressed me. True, Blackstone Audio sound engineers fail to soften her natural sibilance adequately (you may need to adjust your equalizer), but I would listen to more from Ms. Mercer-Meyers any day.

Altogether, 'Rule Of Law' rates 9 stars out of 10. Be aware if you download it: the book is almost irritatingly G-rated (a few swear words and an intimacy scene or two could have elevated it considerably). Regardless, I feel fortunate to have found the book on the 'Plus' menu, because it would actually rate a Credit. It's good enough, in fact, that I have downloaded other Singer novels to my library to hear more from him.

[Incidentally: I would love to see a debate between Richard North Patterson and Randy Singer on any controversial topic. Both are keenly perceptive & opinionated, neither wears their politics on their sleeves (despite it being obvious how they would vote in a D vs R election), and both display clarity & perspicacity]

A reflection on today’s abuse of power

By not taking up the cause of righteousness we defer to those who abuse their power. This story illustrates how much courage and personal sacrifice is needed if you want even a chance to overcome a wrong in today’s complex world.
