Publisher's Summary

We’re told that if we care about our health - or our planet - eliminating red meat from our diets is crucial. That beef is bad for us and cattle farming is horrible for the environment. But science says otherwise.

Beef is framed as the most environmentally destructive and least healthy of meats. We’re often told that the only solution is to reduce or quit red meat entirely. But despite what anti-meat groups, vegan celebrities, and some health experts say, plant-based agriculture is far from a perfect solution. In Sacred Cow, registered dietitian Diana Rodgers and former research biochemist and New York Times best-selling author Robb Wolf explore the quandaries we face in raising and eating animals - focusing on the largest (and most maligned) of farmed animals, the cow.

Taking a critical look at the assumptions and misinformation about meat, Sacred Cow points out the flaws in our current food system and in the proposed “solutions”. Inside, Rodgers and Wolf reveal contrarian but science-based findings, such as:

  • Meat and animal fat are essential for our bodies
  • A sustainable food system cannot exist without animals
  • A vegan diet may destroy more life than sustainable cattle farming
  • Regenerative cattle ranching is one of our best tools at mitigating climate change

You’ll also find practical guidance on how to support sustainable farms and a 30-day challenge to help you transition to a healthful and conscientious diet. With scientific rigor, deep compassion, and wit, Rodgers and Wolf argue unequivocally that meat (done right) should have a place on the table.

It’s not the cow, it’s the how!

Essential reading, or listening!

This book presents a very balanced perspective on the pros and cons of growing different types of food (meat, crops), environmental considerations for growing these different types of foods, human nutritional needs, the ethical considerations of various food choices. An extremely important read for anyone interested in their health and the health of our planet.

Mostly excellent, but should have been two books

Rogers & Wolf's analysis of food, nutrition, farming practices and the influences on our food supply is thorough and their conclusions compelling.

However, the final section on how to design one's own diet switched gears from serious science to self-improvement, went off on a tangent, and would have done better as a separate book.

As for the performance, it had a touch of reading-to-children, which I found offputting.

Great reading for a different perspective

it is hard to have voice and talk differently from assuming norm concepts and dare to continue.

while being strong believer of impact on climate change, I found the this book context compelling.

thanks for lots of info and discussions makes me think differently.

well written, informative ans factual.

Valuable for anyone who feels that we all should be vegetarians/vegans. Good jumping poit about regenerative farming. there are a lot of subjects tackled in this book, so they had limited space to elaborate on each. but this is a great starting line.

good performance by the reader.

An important book.

Loved this. Not anti vegan, not anti meat. Just well researched data, and perspective.

what an eye opener

I loved this book. I loved that it was so in-depth about all the aspects, not just some cherry-picked ones. Very nuanced and exhaustive.

Much needed read

Thank you Diana & Robb for bringing a different perspective to light along with studies to back it up. We need more pieces like this in our world today. Too many people go along with the mainstream narrative. Thank you for your work!

Diet Fads Uncovered

I have tried a vegan diet, paleo, keto I have heard so many mixed reviews so I’m always trying to do my own research. This book was very well written, I love the environmental case they built and the hope it offers for those of us who lean towards regenerative agriculture!
Let’s try to source our foods better to help improve the market with our buying power and avoid Frankenstein Foods.

Excited to watch the documentary when it’s available in my country.
