About this listen
Lord Thornby has been trapped on his father's isolated Yorkshire estate for a year. There are no bars or chains; he simply can't leave. His sanity is starting to fray.
When industrial magician John Blake arrives to investigate a case of witchcraft, he finds the peculiar, arrogant Thornby as alarming as he is attractive. John soon finds himself caught up in a dark fairy tale, where all the rules of magic - and love - are changed.
To set Thornby free, both men must face life - changing truths - and John must accept that the brave, witty man who's winning his heart may also be about to break it. Can they escape a web of magic that's as perilous as love?

The magic fantasy world.
In the beginning I was like hmmmm?? Then it started to get interesting. Totally original and fascinating magic world!!! Did not expect where it went. Always love Joel Leslie’s narration.

Great, interesting listen
I really enjoyed this book. I didn’t know what to really expect and at first I thought I wouldn’t like it, but the story evolved into a concept I’ve not read before and it was very interesting.

Lots of twists and turns, fun magic system
4.25/5 Read this for the first time four or five years ago from the library and was pleased to find it available in Audible for a “reread”. As always, Joel Leslie’s performance is top notch, and it was still a thoroughly enjoyable reread even with knowing the mystery beforehand. (I found myself looking for clues and foreshadowing instead.)
There’s something extremely chilling about being trapped somewhat with no visible barriers and no knowledge that magic is real. Soren is clearly in quite a state by the time John arrives, and I like how their snark soon settles into something much more real given the desperate circumstances and the sort of inevitable vulnerability that comes from the situation.
I enjoyed seeing how Soren has changed (for the better and the worse) having been trapped on the estate. John is such a decent person, and I liked how he really tries to help pretty much anyone in need.
The magic was really interesting, and I loved John’s growing relationship with his materials (especially as it grows out of him being frugal and not a spoiled noble, lol). It was fascinating to see what they would do next and see John’s understanding of magic change.
There was plenty of tension about which characters were good and which were bad, and I was definitely not expecting all of the reveals at the end! There are still some questions, but I believe that these two can figure things out!
