About this listen

When my magic manifested at puberty, my parents sold me to the Illuminati. The Order of the Illuminati trained me as an assassin, spy, and thief. But when they sent me to steal a magical artifact that reveals Truth in all things, I discovered that I was working for the Dark and not the Light. The Illuminati trained me well, and paid the ultimate price for their deception.

Thousands of miles away, I landed a job in a quirky little bar. But the scattered remnants of the Order still strive for world domination, and no one leaves the Illuminati alive.

Contains mature themes.

editing and new narrator needed

I think this is a series that I might have to read instead of listen to.

The narrator sounds like a teenager and her narration is very start. stop. It does not flow, she has inflections in her voice, that are unnatural for speech or storytelling especially for the main lead who is a trained assassin and isn't 16. She reads the book in such a matter of fact way almost like you're giving directions. "Go to the end of the street. Then turn left. Then turn right. Then turn around, and that's the house". or doing a presentation, but in point form and it ruined the book for me.

Almost immediately. I wanted to stop reading, but I wanted to listen to the book. I enjoyed the story for the most part but was never drawn into it. it felt like the book was written by a new author trying to add intrigue and suspense but not knowing how.

The concept isn't original, but it was good. However, there was a ton of editing needed as the FL was a walking contradiction and at times the story just made no sense. for example, She finds out she's working for the bad guys. decides she's gonna leave it all behind and go into hiding, yet, she leaves with only a few hundred dollars, 2 changes in outfits and NO weapons after 9 years of being an assassin. The whole innocent act doesn't jive especially as she's grown and only went into the organization at 13. she was fed lies, but in her own words she was treated well, given praise, sent on missions where she was set up in fancy hotels and given unlimited spending. she was trained to blend in, stay hidden or to infiltrate, but then we have the complete opposite happening. She hid her powers, then she was given a bit of secret training, but in fights she's an expert.
she comes across as bewildered and innocent, but as ruthless as the assassin named scorpion she should have been more mature. As betrayed as she was she should have been angered. neither was the case.
We have the character stating she was praised and treated kindly and given freedoms but when the new characters are nice to her, we have this concept of her being shocked because "she's never been shown kindness", it's quite contradictory, and I don't think the author realized, but a good editor should have caught that.

She was 13 when she was sold. That's a lot of formative years before becoming an assassin and as an assassin she was given freedoms, yet she can't drive, though there were times she had to lay in wait. what? did she take a taxi? All decked out in black with a sword? did she walk? she should be an expert in disguises, especially since as an assassin she had to schmooze with the upper crust of society, so she should have a plethara of identifications, yet she doesn't. little contradictions all over the place, but for me, they added up and made the story frustrating.

The romantic aspect of the book was jarring, I wasn't quite sure why any of it was added. The interest by Blair, Josh, Trevor, etc, didn't make sense to me, and I wasn't sure if the author was trying to set up a scenario where you would wonder who she would eventually decide to date. It failed in adding any romance to this book and just made the situations awkward and confusing.
