About this listen
The number one New York Times best-selling sequel to A Discovery of Witches, book two of the All Souls Series. Look for the hit TV series A Discovery of Witches, streaming on AMC Plus, Sundance Now, and Shudder. Season Two premieres January 9, 2021!
Picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night takes reluctant witch Diana Bishop and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782—the lost and enchanted manuscript whose mystery first pulled Diana and Matthew into one another's orbit—deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew's past tightens around them. Together they find they must embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

Story
In the spring of 1628, the Witchfinder of Wessex finds himself a true Witch. As Bess Hawksmith watches her mother swing from the Hanging Tree she knows that only one man can save her from the same fate at the hands of the panicked mob: the Warlock Gideon Masters, and his Book of Shadows. Secluded at his cottage in the woods, Gideon instructs Bess in the Craft, awakening formidable powers she didn’t know she had and making her immortal. She couldn't have foreseen that even now, centuries later, he would be hunting her across time, determined to claim payment for saving her life.

Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Excellent Sequel!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of the All Souls trilogy, and Shadow of Night has made me eager to listen to the final book! Once again, superb writing by Deborah Harkness, and Jennifer Ikeda’s narration is gripping as always.

Great twist to time travel!!!
It's absolutely phenomenal. The story line follows well, leaving nothing unfinished or hanging. The narration is beautifully done. I especially enjoyed the emperor's voice (it matched his character and imbued his part with a depth you don't always get to chuckle about)

Amazing Narration & Story
Jennifer Ikeda is an incredible voice actor. Her ability to transition from each character with such a smooth fluidity is incredible. I would recommend listening to anything that she narrates because she is incredible. Her accents are phenomenal. When she lowers her voice into a more manly tone, it is 100% completely believable. I have a hard time picturing these characters without those voices now!!!
Outside of the stunning performance, I highly, HIGHLY recommend this trilogy. It’s supernatural, historical and romantic. It’s hard to put this trilogy into one genre, so I feel like those three genres together make the most sense in describing the book! Harkness writes with such earnestness and honesty that you find yourself believing even the most far fetched. I love Diana and Matthew. I love Phillipe & Ysabeau. Love the entire cast. LOVE Gallowglass. I would lay my life down for Gallowglass.
Phenomenal series.

Addictive series
Book 2 kept me on my toes. It had me second guessing myself ... maybe demons, vampires, and witches are real.
Can't wait to get into book 3.

good
personally I found some historical details could have been omitted but that would have been hard for our author as she is an historian. it's not bad that there was a lot of details of the past I just found it long and sometimes hard to see what it had to do with the story. otherwise a good second book well performed by our narrator she totally rocked it with character voices !!!
