About this listen

A compulsive debut thriller about motherhood, obsession, and how far we’d go to protect the ones we love

Five-year-old Ava Boone vanished without a trace six months ago. No witnesses, no sightings or arrests. But Grace Wright just moved in next door to the only suspect the case had: quiet, middle-aged Leland Ernest.

Recently divorced, Grace uprooted her two small children to start again and hopes the move will reset her crippling insomnia. With whispered neighborhood gossip and increasingly sleepless nights, Grace develops a fierce obsession with Leland and the safety of her children. Could she really be living next door to a child-kidnapper? A murderer?

With reality and dream blurring more each day, Grace desperately pursues the truth - following Ava’s family, demanding answers from the police - and then a body is discovered.

A fun suspenseful read

This book was a nice break from my string of historical fiction and biographies. A short read that will keep you listening till the end.

Wanted to love it but not quite there

I wanted to like the main character but it was hard to resonate with her - likely given her sort of psychotic break. Also strange to be suffering from psychosis and other real and potential physical ailments at the same time - felt a bit unrealistic.

The story itself had a lot of potential but never quite got there for me. The ending was mediocre.

The narrator kept the story intriguing and kept me listening.

Nice plot twists and characters.

The book was written in a bit of a different style than the average mystery. The style and character development really work to twist your assumptions and you can't figure out the "who-dunnit" aspect of it. Highly recommended.

Great narrator. Unbearable protagonist

It’s difficult to finish because of the absolutely unbearable protagonist and the relentless onslaught of her stream of consciousness. The narrator is the only good thing.

A disturbing story with psychological issues. Hard to understand sometimes .

The narrator was amazing. It was very hard to get into the story but ending was great.
Definitely enjoyed it

Keeps you wondering what is actually happening

Really describes the whole spiraling out of control of good people. Good story. Good narrative.

Loved it!

The narration is perfect. You’re always on the edge of your seat and the characters are compelling and real. While I hate always being in suspense, I still wanted more at the end of this book.
A great satisfying novel.

Took a long time to get there, but it was good!!

The beginning of Sharon Doering's novel, She Lies Close, felt long and repetitive, although that may have been due to the OCD and psychotic break the protagonist was undergoing. Saying that, I found her funny, her kids funny, and her ability to laugh at the indignities of being a parent sometimes funny. I enjoyed the outcome, all twists and turns. It took a long time to get there, but it was good!
