About this listen

It is 1740 and when Louise Fletcher is offered work as a maid in the bustling port of Harwich she leaps at the chance.

Fifteen-year old Luke is in a Harwich tavern when it is raided by His Majesty's Navy and he is press ganged and sent to sea on board the warship Essex. The worlds they find are more dangerous and more exciting than they could ever have imagined…

One of the best books I’ve ever read.

A masterfully told tale of love, determination, sexual and gender identity. A refreshingly accurate portrayal of love and sex between two women, as well as a woman and trans man. In addition to being objectively well written, I appreciated this book for portraying love stories I can directly equate to those I’ve experienced in my own life (hauntingly similar in some cases). This was the first time a book has resonated with me on that level, and I know, for that reason, it will forever be in my heart and mind.
