About this listen
Teachings and meditations to "shift" into the freedom of awakening.
It is possible to access the same sense of well-being, clarity, inner freedom, and loving connection realized by the world's meditation masters. We can do this by shifting our awareness in the midst of our daily lives. Shift into Freedom is an unabridged audiobook presentation of innovative teacher Loch Kelly's training manual for actively participating in the evolution of your own consciousness.
Synthesizing insights from neuroscience and psychology with wisdom from the world's contemplative traditions, Shift into Freedom offers an accessible and remarkably powerful series of meditations that lead us to a little-known natural capacity called "awake awareness". Through an unfolding process of "small glimpses, many times", these exercises shift us from a thought-based knowing to an awareness-based way of operating in the world.
With continued practice, we learn to "unhook" from our customary home in our ego-based identity - and then sustain an embodied presence and relatedness known as "open-hearted awareness". Loch Kelly teaches that this is "the meeting place of awakening and growing up, where we have the capacity to handle a fully emotional, intimate life and act with authenticity and compassion."
"The goal of these meditations is not to transcend the human condition," explains Loch Kelly, "but to discover how to live a fully intimate human life." Shift into Freedom gives you the tools to navigate your life with clarity and unconditional love.

A bit tedious but well worth the read
Content is excellent, if sometimes repetitive and sometimes overly in-depth. I appreciate the depth, as lots of mindfulness, meditation and awakening content glances over the nitty-gritty and leaves me with questions over minor vagaries. Not so with this book! If you want clarification on some details of practice or what to expect experientially, Loch has you covered. I think the author could have benefitted from more collaboration with an editor, as some of the terminology he develops is less-than-succinct to me, and the overall structure of the book seems to meander a little from chapter to chapter. But those are minor gripes — Loch has obviously been teaching this for awhile, and these are the terms and analogies he has come to in an order that makes sense to him, so why reinvent the wheel. It seems to work well.
Loch as a reader here might strike some as unsuitable, because he has a bit of a halting and inconsistent style, however, I think he is the ideal narrator for this particular book. As mentioned, some of the language gets cumbersome, and some of the phrases are written in a way that I think could really frustrate readers, but Loch understands his own content and his own meaning well, and the delivery of certain phrases and terms helps to emphasize his intent. I might be tempted to write him off or skim over certain sections were I reading a print version. Having the author read for a book like this also lends a certain closeness and trust to the relationship between author and reader, at least in my experience.
The “glimpse practices” (short meditative exercises sprinkled throughout the book) are very effective, and I will save and use them in the future. However, for the most part, Loch doesn’t really deliver these like guided meditations — he sort of splits the difference between guiding the listener and just reading them out as text. This is fine, but you will probably benefit from sitting with the pause button under a finger, so you can take the time to follow along with each step, or listen through them a couple times to do on your own, or maybe even record your own versions of these practices with pacing tailored to your needs.
Highly recommend overall — I am encouraging others in my life to read it, and it has helped me significantly where I felt “stuck” and confused in my journey. If you are unconvinced about concepts like “awakening,” this book won’t convince you - just more esoteric language jumbled together. If you are already on the path then I’m sure you will find plenty that will resonate.
PS: some of the glimpse practices seem wildly out of order to me. If you run into one that confuses you, just give it a shot, notice what you can notice, and leave the door open for other glimpses to “click” with you better in the future. That was my experience, and I’m glad I chose to sit down and really give each practice a solid shot or two. Some of them had unexpectedly great results! Your mileage may vary slightly, but I guarantee you’ll get out of this one what you put in.
