About this listen

In Israel and the West, it is called the Six Day War. In the Arab world, it is known as the June War or, simply, as "the Setback". Never has a conflict so short, unforeseen, and largely unwanted by both sides so transformed the world. The Yom Kippur War, the war in Lebanon, the Camp David accords, the controversy over Jerusalem and Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the intifada, and the rise of Palestinian terror are all part of the outcome of those six days of intense Arab-Israeli fighting in the summer of 1967.

Michael B. Oren spotlights all the participants: Arab, Israeli, Soviet, and American, as well as all the world leaders involved in this earth-shaking clash that transformed the world.

Incredibly riveting and detailed account

While listening one gets the sense you're an invisible observer and listener privy to decisions affected by individuals and nations. Astoundingly detailed to the point one wonders, how did the writer find such information? Lastly, and this is just a personal opinion, it left me filled with wonder at how over and over again, for thousands if years, such a persected and hated people and nation has always risen again out of the ashes. There can only be one explanation.

Well written and entertaining

The research completed to write this book must have taken years. Impressive amount of detail. On the longer/heavier side (not necessarily a pro or a con). The book takes its time to the stage properly, but the extra time adds value/appreciation to the main 6 days. The reader speaks quickly and I found the names and locations can be difficult to remember. This was the first audio book I slowed down the reading speed for, to 0.8, to ensure I properly soaked up the details. Found it hard to ‘put down’. 5 stars. Would rec’d.

Detailed look at the Six Days War

Excellent book, thoroughly researched, and fascinating. A deep dive into the global politics surrounding the conflict. The narrator is excellent, one of my favourites.

Fantastic Piece

A wonderful work that gives you an unbiased 360 view of the events that led to the Six Days War! I've read this book four times already within a year. It is a mesmerizing overview of one of the most important events in Israel's history! Robert Whitfield's narration just takes it to the next level. If you haven't read this yet - get the audible version first and then buy the book!

Well written and well read. A comprehensive recap of the lead up and events of June 1967.

An excellent recap of just one of the many violent interactions between Israel and the rest of the Middle East.

Good non-partisan narrative

An easy historical listen, with just enough voice variance to keep it from being a mere recitation of facts.

Good, but VERY thorough!

Israel and the Middle East is something I've always been somewhat interested in. So, when I saw this, I thought I'd give it a try. I would recommend this book for anyone with more than a passing interest in history/the Middle East. It would also be useful for anyone needed a reference for a history paper on Israel/the Middle East. It is well written, thorough and tells the story from differing points, i.e. Arab, Israeli, with US and USSR points as well. The narrator does an excellent job. However, it is VERY, VERY thorough which can make it hard to follow and hard to listen to at certain times, especially if you are not overly familiar with the details of the conflict (or if this is your first time reading anything about the conflict - as was the case with me!). The portion about the actual war (I would guess approximately 1/3 or so of the book) is very good and exciting. However, the rest of the book deals with what led to the war and then some of the aftermath/post-war reaction. Those sections (especially pre-war) are very detailed. There are times when it is almost an hour-by-hour narrative of the events leading up to the war (or at least, day-by-day). To use the word/phrase of reviewer (of a different book), this book is very "dense". If you want a significant amount of detail on the Six Day War, this book is for you. If you looking for something that details the fighting alone or more of an overview, then I would recommend a different book (or at least skip (approximately) the first 10 or 11 hours of this book!).
