Publisher's Summary

Everywhere hailed as a masterpiece of historical adventure, this enthralling narrative recounts the experiences of 12 American sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of Africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the bone-dry heart of the Sahara. The ordeal of these men - who found themselves tested by barbarism, murder, starvation, death, dehydration, and hostile tribes that roamed the desert on camelback - is made indelibly vivid in this gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.

decent adventure story.

this is hey good adventure story and although the tale itself speaks to an arduous journey, the book isn't spectacular. I found the loss quarter dragged and the characters were hard to keep track of as the sellers keep getting passed to different groups

Narrator was brutal

I’m sorry Mr. narrator guy, but your narration skills were really brutal… What a snoozer… This could’ve been so much better.

Skeletons on the Zahara

It was a little bit on the repetitive side for me but still a fantastic story of survival.

Reminder that none of us is safe ...

This is a storyline I had not hear of before, and although historical, is testimony that none of are exempt from brutality at the hands of others. One just has to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and in the wrong hands. While heart wrenching and terrifying as in most historical accounts of brutality, there are usually some on the 'wrong side' who will come to the aid of those being brutalized although sometimes not always for the right reasons. Despite this, I appreciated the show of humanity and compassion from some who owned the slaves/captives, which is always necessary in these situations to help resolve such issues. Thank you to the author for bringing this piece of history forward and to the narrator for his work!
