About this listen
Brian Staveley's new standalone returns to the critically acclaimed Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne universe, following a priestess-assassin for the God of Death
From the award-winning epic fantasy world of The Emperor's Blades...
Pyrre Lakatur is not, to her mind, an assassin, not a murderer - she is a priestess. At least, she will be once she passes her final trial.
The problem isn't the killing. The problem, rather, is love. For to complete her trial, Pyrre has ten days to kill the seven people enumerated in an ancient song, including "the one who made your mind and body sing with love / who will not come again."
Pyrre isn't sure she's ever been in love. And if she fails to find someone who can draw such passion from her, or fails to kill that someone, her order will give her to their god, the God of Death. Pyrre's not afraid to die, but she hates to fail, and so, as her trial is set to begin, she returns to the city of her birth in the hope of finding love... and ending it on the edge of her sword.

Story
It seemed the unthinkable had happened. Someone had actually targeted the Ghalian, an order of assassins known and feared across the systems. It was madness. Only a fool would go after the likes of them. But, it seemed, the galaxy had no shortage of fools. Retaliation most bloody was in order, and one man stood ready to spring into action. Hozark was his name, and he was no ordinary man. He was a Master Ghalian, an assassin skilled in the ways of death. Practical, mechanical, magical, to him it made no difference.

An engaging story
I just wish it had been a bit longer. It was quite a bit shorter than Staveley's other novels. However, this story followed only a single storyline rather than 3 or more simultaneously, and was a back story explaining about the Skullsworn. Overall, excellent, just less content than his other works.

A bit disappointing...
After the introduction of Pyrre in previous books, the personality of this younger Pyrre was disappointing. I get that this was before she was cool but I was hoping for more when I bought the book. The narrator was OK but I would have preferred if she had given Pyrre the correct accent.

The Story
Pyrre was one of my favorite characters from the original books and I always wanted more and I'm so glad that Brian wrote this book because it turned out amazing. You can finally see where Pyrre got all her witty anecdotes from the Emperor's blades. she really did turn out just like Ella.

Fun standalone for this series
I got through the series of three books before this. Listening to this after it could easily be a prelude. But great stand alone book.
Narration was well done, I could tell differences with characters easily.
