About this listen

In Audio for the First Time! Narrated by Lina's Original English Actress, Lisa Ortiz!

Beautiful and brilliant sorcerer girls just can't have nice things, huh? All I wanted to do was swipe a little bit of bandit treasure. Now suddenly I'm being chased around by icky trolls, nasty demons, mean mummies, and brooding golem bad boys. And for what? A tiny little artifact that can bring about the end of the world? Hah! I'll show them there's a reason you don't cross Lina Inverse...

lisa is back

This was very nostalgic as someone who grew up with the anime. I hope they continue even if it's an old series.

Great new experience for a classic fantasy/comedy

I've been at least aware of the Slayers series since elementary school, but this was my first direct experience with Hajime Kanzaka's original novels. For those also primarily familiar with the anime adaptations, this first novel served as the basis for the first 10 episodes of the 1995 TV show. Despite the differences in structure and flow, I couldn't help but be wrapped up in the nostalgia of recognizing many of the comedy beats that were intact between the mediums.

The afterword included in this translation includes a lot of interesting info about the original release. Kanzaka displays in this first volume a lot of attention laying the foundation of this fantasy world, and showcasing fun interactions between main character Lina's (not unfounded) confidence clashing with the various foils she bumps into. The scene locations and setting descriptions tend to fall lower in the novel's priority, often simply alternating from 'forest clearing' to 'roadside inn', which feels more repetitive than it may have otherwise been given the plot's strong forward momentum and the fairly short length, being a Light Novel.

Lisa Ortiz's narration was what sold me on this impulse purchase and exceeded what I had hoped for. For the entire audiobook's runtime she delivers a wonderful range for Lina's 1st person narration and dialogue alike, and lends a plethora of both grounded and comedic performances for the supporting cast. As Lina's actress across most of Slayers' English anime dubs, it's hard not to love the effort (and novelty) of Ortiz filling in the dialogue of other mainstays like Gourry and Zelgadis, or the energy she delivers for the likes of Zolf, Dilgear and Noonsa.

I hope that J-Novel continues to bring back Lisa Ortiz for audiobook releases of more novels in the series!
