Just A Bit Too Ludicrous
I'm usually pretty good at setting aside reservations (+/- logic) in order to immerse myself in a story. Unfortunately, I'm a physician.. and Tim Adler's grasp of medical/hospital procedures - while well-researched - is annoyingly deficient. On top of the irritating implausibility of events/emergencies, Adler also crafts an ObGyn ('Dr. Jemma Sands') who makes questionable decision after questionable decision (unlike any physician or even medical student that I have ever met).. and delivers a plot with clichéd elements that are impossible to ignore (lookalikes on CCTV, faked deaths, and staged suicides for example).
That said, Adler writes a realistic genuinely detestable vengeful psychopath ('Toppy Mrazek'), uses foreshadowing brilliantly, and paces the twisty-turny plot in this story flawlessly.
The reading by Charlie Sanderson is likewise hit & miss. Her diction, cadence, timbre, and tone are definitely professional.. but she reads much too slowly and her voice-acting is uninspired (e.g. Child characters are cartoonish and French accents are over-the-top). In general, Audible Studios Inc did a creditable - if unspectacular - job casting the project and providing technical support.
Altogether, this recording of 'Slow Bleed' merits 6.5 stars out of 10. This audiobook iteration is doubtless better than a text (paper or eBook) version would be - but it was appropriate to include it as a 'Plus' selection. Should they ask for a Credit, better options beckon.
[Incidentally: I have no idea what it means when you say coffee, wine, or various foods taste "silky". It's such an odd description]
