Publisher's Summary

Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, faces a threat unlike any other in this thrilling entry in the number one New York Times best-selling series.

I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman.
My only “superpowers” are that I turn into a 35 pound coyote and fix Volkswagens. But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back. It looks like I'm going to need them.

Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill - until she locked her doors against them. They left behind their great castles and troves of magical artifacts. They abandoned their prisoners and their pets. Without the fae to mind them, those creatures who remained behind roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc. Only the deadliest survived.

Now one of those prisoners has escaped. It can look like anyone, any creature it chooses. But if it bites you, it controls you. It lives for chaos and destruction. It can make you do anything - even kill the person you love the most. Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities. In my territory.

It won't, can't, remain.

Not if I have anything to say about it.

Never Disappointed

The Mercy Thompson series is always a good read. This is my first one as an audible book and it was just as good as reading it myself

Heck of a story

Patricia briggs does it again. if you give this series a chance you wont regret it. I love the Mercyverse and Smoke Bitten is a great addition to the series. I only wish we'd had more time with Sherwood Post (who is he!!!!!) and Kyle. They are such fun characters and it's joyful falling into their world. Once again Lorelei King does a fantastic job bringing all the characters to life.
If I had any complaints its that there really wasnt any storyline progression for the overall series until the final hour and a half of the book. Dont expect to get any answers to long standing questions, but be prepared for a wonderful plot twist and a surprise return. overall it was a fun read but sort of felt like a filler book leading up to the new alpha and omega in 2021. Hopefully we get some answers. There isn't really a single big bad in this book just smaller issues that when all bundled together make for an enjoyable listen. 5 stars

Fantastic!!

How do you keep writing stories in the same series and they keep getting better and better (also knowing that they started off really good)? I’m not sure, but this book is the top of the series, in my opinion. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Kudos to excellent narration as well.

Breath Catching

I LOVED it. Patricia Briggs has yet to write an instalment I do not thoroughly enjoy. Lorelei King is synonymous with the Mercy Thompson series. Another wonderful performance.

The story progressed nicely and I had a few breath catching moments that have me greatly appreciating the end. I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

Loved it & love this series

I love these books, I've loved this series for a decade now and adore any opportunity to be immersed back into Mercy's world.

Mercy is one of my all-time favourite, kick-ass heroes. Briggs' storytelling is technical enough to keep me satisfied with details, but not too much to over-do it. One thing I was surprised by in this book was the added curse words, that's new! I like that Briggs' has let a few f-bombs fly, I think it adds a realness to the characters. Briggs' world and character building, as in her other works, are on-point, immersive, funny and interesting.

I loved the action, the other-world descriptions that added a fresher element to the story line and, as always, Mercy's humour, cunning and relationship managing with those she loves was excellent.

I'm so happy to know that this series will continue!

Another book, another monster!

It's like an addiction. I'm reading several other compelling novels, but I have to pick up and read the next installment in the Mercy Thompson series. Now the pack is beset by old friends (I typed "Fiends," and that's probably correct, too), old enemies, old frenemies, and threats from Under the Hill and beyond the grave.

Mercy has to deal with that, and still make pancakes!
