Passable Biography

Most of this book is a fight-by-fight (and sometimes round-by-round) description of Joe Frazier's professional fights. Admirably, it includes an excellent chronicle of the Frazier/Ali rivalry, but is relatively light on the upbringing, personal life, and training/behind-the-scenes experiences of a fascinating boxing figure. The pacing and organization are good enough to ensure renewed interest (the contributions of ghostwriter Phil Berger ensure that the book isn't boring) - but - as biographies go - it's merely solidly "adequate".

Despite delivering the best Mohammed Ali impersonation that I have ever heard, Bill Andrew Quinn's narration is likewise best described as "Competent". His diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are genuinely commendable, but there is nothing here that another professional reader couldn't have done.

Average text + Average performance = Average audiobook.
'Smokin' Joe' rates an acceptable 5.5 stars out of 10. It was worth the time investment (and I'm pleased that Audible included it as a 'Plus' selection).. if you can get it for Free, don't hesitate
..but should they ask for a Credit, it's really up to you. You're not crazy whichever way you go.

[incidentally: the memorial notes from Joe's children after his death (in the final chapter) are a nice conclusion to the book]
