About this listen
From the man who predicted the worst economic crisis in US history comes Jim Rickards’ second prediction—the collapse of our global economy.
The supply chain crisis is coming to a head. Today, your favorite products are missing from store shelves, caught in supply chain limbo somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. But what does this supply chain disruption look like six months, or even three years, from now? While we hope that post-pandemic recovery will absolve these issues, the reality is that digital currency, meme stonks, and social media can’t solve the age-old problem of producing and moving physical goods across oceans and continents. According to Jim Rickards, consumer frustration is only the tip of a very large, menacing iceberg that threatens global economic collapse.
In Sold Out, Rickards shares his predictions for our post-pandemic future and outlines how consumers and business owners can get ahead of the collapse. You’ll learn how energy shortages in China—fueled by the trade war with Australia—is disrupting the steel market and forcing entire factories to shut down. You’ll also learn how rising inflation will ultimately lead to deflation in a few short years—as consumer spending eventually tanks due to higher taxes, excessive debt, and increased layoffs—and why such economic conditions will closely resemble the 1930s. Finally, Rickards will look at the future of money, including the erasure of the American dollar itself.
Our global economy faces unprecedented challenges in the next few months. But whether we sink or swim depends on how prepared we are—and what we do now to thwart the coming collapse.

Story
The current crisis is not like 2008 or even 1929. The New Depression that has emerged from the COVID pandemic is the worst economic crisis in US history. Most fired employees will remain redundant. Bankruptcies will be common, and banks will buckle under the weight of bad debts. Deflation, debt, and demography will wreck any chance of recovery, and social disorder will follow closely on the heels of market chaos. The happy talk from Wall Street and the White House is an illusion. The worst is yet to come.

In 1971, President Nixon imposed national price controls and took the United States off the gold standard, an extreme measure intended to end an ongoing currency war that had destroyed faith in the U.S. dollar. Today we are engaged in a new currency war, and this time the consequences will be far worse than those that confronted Nixon. Currency wars are one of the most destructive and feared outcomes in international economics.

Since 2014, international monetary agencies have been issuing warnings to a small group of finance ministers, banks, and private equity funds: The US government's cowardly choices not to prosecute J.P. Morgan and its ilk and to bloat the economy with a $4 trillion injection of easy credit are driving us headlong toward a cliff. As Rickards shows in this frightening, meticulously researched book, governments around the world have no compunction about conspiring against their citizens.

Story
The international monetary system has collapsed three times in the past hundred years, in 1914, 1939, and 1971. Each collapse was followed by a period of tumult: War, civil unrest, or significant damage to the stability of the global economy. Now James Rickards, the acclaimed author of Currency Wars, shows why another collapse is rapidly approaching - and why this time, nothing less than the institution of money itself is at risk.

Story
Twenty-five years ago, Neil Howe and the late William Strauss dazzled the world with a provocative new theory of American history. Looking back at the last 500 years, they’d uncovered a distinct pattern: modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting roughly 80 to 100 years, the length of a long human life, with each cycle composed of four eras—or “turnings”—that always arrive in the same order and each last about 25 years. The last of these eras—the fourth turning—was always the most perilous, a period of civic upheaval and national mobilization.

We live in an extraordinary time. Technological advances are happening at a rate faster than our ability to understand them, and in a world that moves faster than we can imagine, we cannot afford to stand still. These advances bring efficiency and abundance - and they are profoundly deflationary. Our economic systems were built for a pre-technology era when labor and capital were inextricably linked - an era that counted on growth and inflation and an era where we made money from inefficiency.

Innovation is the main event of the modern age, the reason we experience both dramatic improvements in our living standards and unsettling changes in our society. Forget short-term symptoms like Donald Trump and Brexit, it is innovation itself that explains them and that will itself shape the 21st century for good and ill. Yet innovation remains a mysterious process, poorly understood by policy makers and businessmen, hard to summon into existence to order, yet inevitable and inexorable when it does happen.

2020 saw a spike in deaths in America, smaller than you might imagine during a pandemic, some of which could be attributed to COVID and to initial treatment strategies that were not effective. But then, in 2021, the stats people expected went off the rails. The CEO of the OneAmerica insurance company publicly disclosed that during the third and fourth quarters of 2021, death in people of working age (18–64) was 40 percent higher than it was before the pandemic. Significantly, the majority of the deaths were not attributed to COVID.

They say John Maynard Keynes called gold a "barbarous relic." They say there isn’t enough gold to support finance and commerce. They say the gold supply can’t increase fast enough to support world growth. They’re wrong. In this bold manifesto, best-selling author and economic commentator James Rickards steps forward to defend gold — as both an irreplaceable store of wealth and a standard for currency.

I AM IN SHOCK
Thank you for sharing this information. I really think that you are really on point of what is really happening in the world.
I am 25 year old I am from Mexico , I been an entrepreneur since I was 13 working with my father and creating mi own business . So I been exploring and learning about business for 12 years via YouTube.
I know about you James Richard because of Robert kiyosaki, London real and Patrick David.
I been traveling around Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, USA and Canada.
Let me tell you something I pay for 2 single Roma Tomatoes in a groceries store in Vancouver and they cost me 7 dollars with that money in my hometown of Mexico I can buy 12.
I can even hire someone to work for me for 8 hours with that kid of money.
If you are telling me that this book have lies you are lying to yourself.
Embrace your self because the beginning of the end of all the fake money is just getting started.
I created this beautiful analogy…
Imagine if you discover fire back in the day
Imagine that you start playing with the fire and start cooking and melting stuff.
The village grow and the community grow with new inventions.
Then fire is just something normal for the new generation that they don’t care about learning how it works.
One day one of these people that didn’t bother to learn start a fire and that fire cause another fire.
Suddenly the whole town is on fire.
And every body is fighting one and other because every body is blaming each other.
I really think that the “fire” in this story is “Debt” and everything and everybody is in “Debt” because of lack of knowledge in how to used correctly to creat new inventions and general wealth.
I really believe that we are entering into a time that fighting and protecting your self will be a praority.
Thank you james for all this good information.
In the good side I think that we still have time because In my years of experience and meeting people. The vast majority of people don’t have a single clue of what is really happening and they just want to deal with the problem when is in their faces.
I don’t think we can calculate stupidity with a mathematical formula but if we can I think that %99 of the population don’t have a single clue of how f**k the macroeconomic works. I will want to see the number of people that buy this book because at least the people that buy this book are in the right path.
Thank you again James Rickards fantastic work
If someone agree with me reach out I will love to meet another survivor.

Good Analysis on Supply Issues - Dumb Talking Points on COVID-19
The analysis of supply chain issues is well done, and gives the reader useful information about the origins of supply issues, and why they will continue into the future.
Unfortunately the author in explicitly includes a misguided rant about COVID-19 and the effectiveness of vaccines, and masks. These debunked talking points seem to be taken straight from his grandmother's Facebook postings. The buyers shines through and his language choice when talking about the pandemic, compared to other issues, he explores in a more neutral manner.

interesting topic with seriously flawed logic
I struggled to finish. When the author focused on logistics it was interesting. The recurrent rants about covid vaccines and climate change were clearly out of the authors area of expertise demonstrating flawed logic, inaccuracies, and bias. The latter made me question what other significant biases the author may have. I do not recommend at all.
