Publisher's Summary
Already a renowned chronicler of the epic events of world history, James A. Michener tackles the most ambitious subject of his career: space, the last great frontier. This astounding novel brings to life the dreams and daring of countless men and women - people like Stanley Mott, the engineer whose irrepressible drive for knowledge places him at the center of the American exploration effort; Norman Grant, the war hero and US senator who takes his personal battle not only to a nation but to the heavens; Dieter Kolff, a German rocket scientist who once worked for the Nazis; Randy Claggett, the astronaut who meets his destiny on a mission to the far side of the moon; and Cynthia Rhee, the reporter whose determined crusade brings their story to a breathless world.
What the critics say
"A novel of very high adventure...a sympathetic, historically sound treatment of an important human endeavor that someday could be the stuff of myth, told here with gripping effect." ( The New York Times Book Review)
" Space is everything that Michener fans have come to expect. Without question, the space program's dramatic dimensions provide the stuff of great fiction." ( BusinessWeek)

The science is good but the fiction is flat
This is an older recording and though the reader has a strong clear voice it doesn’t measure up to modern narrators who can make the dullest material come alive.
The story itself covers many decades, a very interesting time in human history for the development of technology. The author revels in the minute details of anything technical from WWII bombs , to Korean War wooden planes, to the various stages of the space program techniques and machines. Unfortunately there’s little to no character development. The main fictional characters are static and shallow. The female characters fare the worst being blatant stereotypes.
The author shows deep knowledge of the facts and greater political implications but the personal lives of the main characters don’t get the same level of development or growth.

Recording levels are too high
The recording technician should have left much more headroom. The sound clips, and that creates annoying clicks and pops.
Though I enjoyed reading that book at least half a dozen time, the narrator 's slow rendition, coupled with the bad recording, push me toward grabbing the book once more, and read myself.
