Screenplay-quality 'Book One' Of A SciFi Series

I could easily envision this Ken Lozito story submitted as a script to a Hollywood producer, rejected for lacking enough well-paced action, and then converted into a book. Lozito packs most of the excitement into the last few chapters of the book - but otherwise contrives a clever 'First Contact' scenario and sets up an intriguing matrix for future conflict with a fascinating Alien threat.

Unfortunately, reader Jeff Hays turns in a subpar performance that contributes to my "acceptable " assessment of this introductory installment. To be sure, his diction, timbre, cadence, and evidently interested tone are creditable - but he displays annoying breathing patterns & occasional overenunciation (avoid earbuds), and cartoonish voice-acting (particularly for female characters). Podium Audio Inc. definitely could have cast this project better.

Altogether, I rate 'Star Shroud' 7 stars out of 10. If you can get it as a 'Plus' selection, it's a reasonably enjoyable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons - but save your Credit for something else should Audible ask for one. As for me, I will be listening to the currently "free" Book Two in the 'Ascension' series.. curious as to how Lozito handles the now established plot/character parameters.

[N.B. the frustrated romantic feelings between hacker 'Zack Quick' and mission comrade/co-protagonist 'Kaylan Farrow' are awkwardly shoehorned into the story. The sexual tension story element contributes to the impression that Lozito was trying to sell the story to Hollywood Studios conscious of casting considerations & marketing sensibilities. It feels contrived ☹️]

Not bad

Interesting story, slow some times. Typical good ol USA vs bad Russia and China. Lol. Mostly Russia the Chinese guy dies almost right away.
