About this listen

An original novel based on the explosive new TV series Star Trek: Discovery!

Despite being an inexperienced Starfleet cadet, Sylvia Tilly became essential to the USS Discovery finding its way back home from the Mirror Universe. But how did she find that courage? From where did she get that steel? Who nurtured that spark of brilliance? The Way to the Stars recounts for fans everywhere the untold story of Tilly’s past.

It’s not easy being 16, especially when everyone expects great things from Tilly. It’s even harder when her mother and father are Federation luminaries, not to mention pressing her to attend one of the best schools the Federation has to offer. Tilly wants to achieve great things - even though she hasn’t quite worked out how to do that or what it is she wants to do. But this year, everything will change for Tilly, as she is about to embark upon the adventure of a lifetime - an adventure that will take her ever closer to the stars....

Not at all a typical Star Trek novel

I was so hesitant to purchase this that I didn't for almost 2 years. And I buy every ST audiobook that comes out. This is essentially a YA novel. It's a sweet and fairly quiet novel, skilfully rendered by Uma McCormack. She's such a good writer that she gave life and flow to a type of novel that isn't really my bag. There are some terrible reviews for this one out there. If you're expecting the usual Star Trek fare I can totally see why this could disappoint you. But sometimes a little character study can be a welcome replacement for phasers and the alien of the week. The book is fairly short. McCormack doesn't overwrite which can happen with Trek novels. It is a sweet and slight book. Don't overthink it. And I hate to say it but it may cater to girls more than boys.

I want my money back.

The first 10 chapters are completely useless and a waste of time. Not worthy of the Star Trek label. Soap opera grade writing and story. Too bad because this charector deserves more.

My favorite character in the whole story is Tilly-the father that is, maybe the grandma is a close second. I've read and rated all the other Star Trek Discovery novels with 5 stars so giving this one a low rating is disappointing to me.

You can do better.

The narrator was good, she did well considering what she had to work with.
