Better than the movie

I mean, nothing can make Jar Jar palatable to an adult. So you still have to deal with that. But a lot of the terrible lines that were given to Anakin in the movie have been cut out of the book. I call that a win. And I enjoy the rest of the story.

The one major problem I have is that there's music and sound effects in various places. Why? If I wanted music and sound effects I'd watch the movie. Often I'd have to rewind and strain to hear what the narrator is saying because he's getting drowned out. Please, audiobook industry, stop putting music and sound effects in audiobooks! Completely unnecessary and detracts from the experience. Or at least offer a version without all that.

Okay, but the narration could have been better.

Probably the worst of the Star Wars series, but I listened to it anyway because I am a fan of seeing how the Empire rises.
The narration was good except for the Emperor. It didn't even sound like the narrator tried to sound like the character.

Neat

it's nice to know some of the character's thoughts and conversations we don't hear in the movie.

He mispronounced Palpatine’s name

I enjoyed the story but little mistakes kept jumping out at me, like the reader mispronouncing Palpatine’s name through the entire novel, calling Bail Organa “Bail Antilles” and Jar Jar of all people noticing Palpatine smirking after Padme announcing that she’s returning to Naboo, stuff like that kept pulling me out of the story. Pretty good otherwise

SW ep1

Very similar in structure and dialogue to the movie with a few small additional pieces of content. Still enjoyable but if your expecting a over the top immersion past the movie you won’t find it.

mediocre voicework, odd SFX, good narration

adds more scenes and dialogue that greatly enhances the film, plenty of clever foreshadowing, it also helps fleshing out the relationship between the characters, specially Obi Wan and Qui Gon. Some dialog from the film is slightly different but it's likely because the novel was released before the film, overall Terry Brooks did a wonderful job.
The most glaring problem is the performance of the narrator, while the narration itself is great, he does a questionable job with most characters voices, Qui-gon, the Neimodians,B1 droids Panaka, Windu, Sidious; sound particularly bad/bland, Adams also mispronounced the name of important characters/places, like Palpatine & Naboo. Furthermore the choice of music and sound effects often felt out of place , we did not need to hear the sound of Watto's wings fluttering for several seconds, and it was very disappointing that it didn't use any of the music from the movie, not having duel of the fates playing during the Maul fight was odd, instead they used the Imperial March for some of it, perhaps they couldn't use it because the movie wasn't out yet, but since the audiobook has music the Absence of the TPM soundtrack is very noticeable.

Overall it was great and made me like The Phantom Menace even more, the performance is passable considering it was one of the first Unabridged SW audiobooks, but there's much better narrated SW books (anything Marc Thompson).
