Tusker and Lily Smalley stayed on in India. Given the chance to return ‘home’ when Tusker, once a Colonel in the British Army, retired, they chose instead to remain in the small hill town of Pankot, with its eccentric inhabitants and archaic rituals left over from the days of the Empire. Only the tyranny of their imposing landlady threatens to upset the quiet rhythm of their days. Both funny and deeply moving, 'Staying On' is a unique, engrossing portrait of the end of an empire and of a forty-year love affair.

Melancholic story of post Raj Brits left behind in India after partition. Beautifully narrated. Plenty of comic interludes between the expats, their servants and the now independent and often wealthy Indian incumbents. Quite different in tone ( much lighter) from the excellent Raj Quartet by the same author with only tangential overlap so not really a sequel in the true sense. We do however find out a little bit about what happened to the Laytons and Guy Perron et al. after partition and their return to blighty. An excellent listen overall and one needn’t have read the RQ to enjoy this book as a standalone.
