Publisher's Summary

Dashing detective Lord Peter Wimsey is caught up in the murder trial of mystery writer Harriet Vane. Her fiance has died of poisoning exactly as described in one of Harriet's novels, so naturally she is the prime suspect. As Peter looks on, he not only falls in love with the accused but eagerly helps with Harriet's defense when the first trial ends in a hung jury. Will she be convicted and executed for the crime, or can he save her life and win her hand in marriage?

Good but not one of the best Whimsey books

Ian Carmichael does a wonderful job performing this book but I found the story not quite as good as some of the others - not enough wit and humour.

Great narration

Another great Lord Peter Wimsey book. The narration by Ian Carmichael is superb - he really makes the book come to life. My only complaint is with the quality of the recording - it crackles a bit, but since it was recorded in the 1980's that's really not very surprising. Absolutely loved it.

Brilliant characters given life again

Ian Carmichael's narration is the perfect fit for Sayers finest creation, Lord Peter. I might prefer a new higher quality modern recording in some respects, but Carmichael I think hits the authentic period accent so integreal to enjoying vintage fiction, particularly stories that are as much social commentary as they are murder mystery. I doubt another actor could better it.

The audio quality of this version is not great. It's a bit hollow or flat in sections and hard to follow at lower volume or with poor speakers.

Old style mystery,

Quite enjoyable. Ian Carmichael knows how to read those affected toffs the right way. the way some Mysteries are far-fetched it's not surprising modern day Murders aren't figured out too well, so much needed to happen by chance. amazing they can catch anyone
