Publisher's Summary

In Monterey, on the California coast, Sweet Thursday is what they call the day after Lousy Wednesday, which is one of those days that is just naturally bad. Returning to the scene of Cannery Row, the weedy lots and junk heaps and flophouses of Monterey, John Steinbeck once more brings to life the denizens of a netherworld of laughter and tears—from Fauna, new headmistress of the local brothel, to Hazel, a bum whose mother must have wanted a daughter.

What the critics say

“An emphatic and clear-cut statement of Steinbeck’s greatest theme: the common bonds of humanity and love which make goodness and happiness possible.” ( The New Republic)
"“A postwar continuation of Cannery Row, [ Sweet Thursday is] every bit as juicy and relaxed as the original.... This is comedy—bawdy, sentimental, and good fun.” ( The Atlantic)

You'll want to listen to this twice its that good

What can I say: this is one of the most rewarding reading experiences I have had in a long lifetime of reading, and many years of listening to audio books. I cannot praise the reader, Jerry Farden, enough, for his sensitive, imaginative voicing of the characters, giving each just enough of a difference in intonation, accent, pacing, to make them readily identifiable--you can SEE them. And in Steinbeck's deft hands we have a continuation of Cannery Row (which you MUST listen to first, please) that is at once satisfying and deepens our love of the characters and the place. I only wish there were a third sequel. If you don't buy this audiobook you are making a big mistake. If you don't love the reading, you are a numbskull. And if you return it, you are a crook.
