About this listen

Ria lived on Tara Road in Dublin with her dashing husband, Danny, and their two children. She fully believed she was happily married, right up until the day Danny told her he was leaving her to be with his young, pregnant girlfriend. By a chance phone call, Ria meets Marilyn, a woman from New England unable to come to terms with her only son's death and now separated from her husband. The two women exchange houses for the summer with extraordinary consequences, each learning that the other has a deep secret that can never be revealed.

Drawn into lifestyles vastly differing from their own, at first each resents the news of how well the other is getting on. Ria seems to have become quite a hostess, entertaining half the neighborhood, which at first irritates the reserved and withdrawn Marilyn, a woman who has always guarded her privacy. Marilyn seems to have become bosom friends with Ria's children, as well as with Colm, a handsome restaurateur, whom Ria has begun to miss terribly. At the end of the summer, the women at last meet face-to-face. Having learned a great deal, about themselves and about each other, they find that they have become, firmly and forever, good friends.

A moving story rendered with the deft touch of a master artisan, Tara Road is Maeve Binchy at her very best - utterly beautiful, hauntingly unforgettable, entirely original, and wholly enjoyable.

Tara Road

I had read this book many years ago but so enjoyed it as an audiobook. The narration was excellent. exactly the right voice. Loved it just as much as my first read.

Almost perfect!

After a long time, I found this novel so engaging that I found every chance I got to continue listening until the part where Rosemary's true colours were revealed. This is when it lost its 5th star! I normally prefer male voices reading books but this is the first time I was so mesmerized by Katherine's voice. The change in tone, volume and accents were just perfect, which made the story even more enjoyable.

Loved it!

I've always wanted to read a Maeve Binchy book but I have to admit the size of some of them put me off. LOL
Then my sister got me into Audible books. This was my second purchase. I loved it! I listen to my audibles in the car while driving, and I couldn't wait to go for drives, just so I could see what was happening on Tara Road. The narrator was very good and I was so engrossed. Thank you Maeve, and to whoever invented Audibles...I just bought Scarlett Feather, so can't wait to start that and go for more drives.

Amazing, wonderful & enchanting

I can’t say enough good things about this novel. The narrator, the characters and the storyline are all fantastic. I highly recommend it, and I hope that Audible gets more unabridged versions of this author in their library soon.

Poor ending

This is the second Maeve Binchey book that I’ve read. Again, the crooks aren’t punished for their crimes. Also, could Ria have been made to sound any more out to lunch? And again, cheating secrets weren’t revealed so nobody paid the piper. Bad morals of the story.

The narrator' voice

For some reason, this narrator's voice made listening for someone with impaired hearing to understand. Have not had this problem before, but for myself, I will avoid books narrated by her in the future.
