Very interesting take on romance!
As soon as I heard the sample I wanted to keep listening - this narration is fantastic! Once I downloaded it though I couldn't stop listening. The intergalactic/gender neutral/bending romance is new to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a really fun book to listen to... I accidentally finished it in an afternoon because I couldn't put it down.

Recommended!
I love Gail's books and this was such a lovely story, and so outside of her regular and established genre. I look forward to more like this!

Great love story and fantastic performance!
Loved the premise of the story and the sweet relationship between the characters. The world building was interesting and Tristal's naivety made for some very funny moments. The mystery was the main driver of the plot,
and was interesting, but didnt seem to be as much of a focus as the relationship growing between the main characters.
Michael Lesley's performance was amazing as always! He did a great job giving the various characters different voices that made it easy to tell who was speaking, and had an interesting technique to indicate internal dialogue. He does a great job capturing Tristal's sweetness and curiosity, as well as dealing with the alien language.
Loved this story and the performance. Highly recommended it!

Decent book but inconsistent performance
I read the book first and purchased the audio because I liked the story. It's not deep, character development is non-esistent and worldbuilding is limited but considering that there are not many sci-fi MM books at all, this one seemed decent enough, even despite that it's insta-love/insta-lust case, and I always try to avoid this kind of books.
I will not read anything else from L. Carriger, though.
However, I expected more from the performance. I was really impressed by Michael Lesley's work in Soul Eater.
Unfortunately The 5th Gender is a failure and I regret spending an Audible credit for it.
The performance is extremely inconsistent - it looks like the narrator has not read the book in advance and switchs between the voices and points of view without actually following the script. He often mixes it all up - starts the sentence in one voice and finishes in another. It is so confusing that if I did not read the book beforehand I would be unable to follow at all.
I DNF'd listening at the beginning of the 6th chapter.
Do not recommend to anyone.
