About this listen
A top performance expert reveals the secret behind many top athletes and executives: creating a heroic alter ego to activate when the chips are down.
There’s only one person in the way of you unleashing your potential: you. There’s also one person who can move you out of the way so you can perform at your peak.
That person is already inside you. You just need to unlock them. This other part of you is your alter ego. After 21 years of working with elite athletes, performers, and leaders, Todd Herman has discovered how you can use your alter ego to achieve the seemingly impossible. It all clicked for Todd when he met Bo Jackson.
When Herman met Bo Jackson, the professional athlete told him, “Bo Jackson never played a down of football in his entire life.” Bo explained that when he was young, he’d get into trouble because of chaos caused by his anger issues. Then, he saw Friday the 13th and became fascinated by the cold, calculating nature of Jason Voorhees. In that moment, he resolved to stop being Bo Jackson and start being Jason the moment he stepped on the field.
In this transformative guide, Herman teaches you how to create and control an alter ego like Bo - and the thousands of other athletes, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and entertainers who have used this simple tool to change their lives. Herman also shares his own story: He knew that inside was a confident, self-assured, intelligent person who could help others get better results in their lives. When he started using Superman’s classic trick - putting on a pair of glasses - he learned to trigger the specific traits he needed to achieve his goals.
The Alter Ego Effect is not about creating a false mask - it’s about finding the hero already inside you. It’s a proven way of overcoming the self-doubt, negativity, and insecurity that hold you back and empowering you to ultimately become your best self.

Use your head. That’s what we tell ourselves when facing a tricky problem or a difficult project. But a growing body of research indicates that we’ve got it exactly backwards. What we need to do, says acclaimed science writer Annie Murphy Paul, is think outside the brain. A host of “extra-neural” resources—the feelings and movements of our bodies, the physical spaces in which we learn and work, and the minds of those around us— can help us focus more intently, comprehend more deeply, and create more imaginatively.

One of the biggest myths that plagues the business world today is that our ability to network depends on having the “gift-of-gab”. You don’t have to be outgoing to be successful at networking. You don’t have to become a relentless self-promoter. In fact, you don’t have to act like an extrovert at all. Matthew Pollard, an introvert himself, draws on over a decade of research and real-world examples to provide an actionable blueprint for introverted networking.

Picasso couldn’t pass a fourth grade math test. And Jobs left high school with a 2.65 GPA. The Hidden Habits of Genius explores the meaning of this contested term, and the unexpected motivations of those we have dubbed "genius" throughout history, from Charles Darwin and Marie Curie to Leonardo Da Vinci and Andy Warhol to Toni Morrison and Elon Musk.

"The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do". With these words, Apple Inc., and its leader, Steve Jobs, catalyzed a movement. Whenever Jobs took the stage to talk about new Apple products, the whole world seemed to stop and listen. That’s because Jobs was offering a vision of the future. He wanted you to feel what the world might someday be like, and trust him to take you there. As a leader, you have the same potential to not only anticipate the future and invent creative initiatives, but to also inspire those around you.

While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember 20 years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children?

An inspiring book!
I love Todd Herman's new book! I've known about this technique for awhile but hadn't put it in place. I love all the experience he's drawn on - more than 20 years of working with high profile athletes - he has solid knowledge of what works. Also, as a voice artist, I also appreciate how he reads the book - as if he were just having a conversation with me! Makes it much more interesting. Bravo Todd for this achievement!

CALM in times of UNTIDINESS
Todd unravels the code of how the mind wants to devolve into despair during a crisis. He spends as little time on that and swiftly moves to the solution we as entrepreneurs must use to "rally the troops" and get everyone back to work again. It reminds me of a tiny bit of a Youtube business video I ghostwrote for a very famous influencer. The idea was similar, in that we as entrepreneurs have a responsibility to get the economy going; NOT the government. The government has the job of making sure we are all safe while we get this giant engine running again.
I really like the way Todd approaches the matter on very real human terms.
His secret sauce is in one place referred to as C.A.L.M.; listen to his book to find out how CALM can benefit your team.
