About this listen

From New York Times best-selling author Penelope Ward comes a new stand-alone novel.

At first, my neighbor Deacon frustrated me. Sure, he was great-looking and friendly. But our walls were thin, and on occasion, he’d bring women to his place and keep me awake while he “entertained” them. As a single mother to an infant, I didn’t appreciate it. So, finally, it was my turn.

When my daughter wouldn’t stop wailing one night, Mr. Manwhore came knocking on my door. Miraculously, at the sound of his voice, Sunny stopped crying. And when he held her...she eventually fell asleep in his arms.

Deacon was rough on the exterior, but apparently on the inside? Mr. Single-and-Ready-to-Mingle was a baby whisperer.

After that night, we became friends. He’d go for coffee runs. Come over to chat. Normal friend stuff.

But over time, our conversations ran deeper. We got closer. Until one night we crossed the line.

Our friendship turned into a complicated mess.

I’d gone and fallen for a guy who’d sworn off commitment and kids. I knew Deacon was starting to care for me too, even though Sunny and I didn’t fit into any plan he’d ever imagined for himself.

He was wrong for me - so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend”.

Then why did I wish more than anything that I could be the one woman to change him?

Well Written but a bit slow & boring

I give this 3.5 stars. This is my first book by this author. I do think it was well written and the characters were relatable. I just found it slow moving and a bit on the predictable side.
The repetitive chatter of how every little thing wakes the baby almost made me stop the book a few times! "Oh we can't do that, we will wake Sonny" , or "We can't boil water because the kettle whistle will wake the baby" "We can't put whip cream on our hot chocolate because it makes noise coming out of the can & it can wake the baby" OMG! Yet their "f---k sessions didn't seem to bother the baby. That is what drove me crazy.

A beautiful romance!

Absolutely fell in love with the characters in this story! As are all of the books I've read by this author, this story is compelling, heart warming, and deals with real important subjects while being entertaining and steamy! Carisse is a 25 year old single parent of a 6 month old little girl, Sunny who has down syndrome. She confronts Deacon her hot neighbor after a, sleepless night due to his "loud nightly activities". They hit it off and become great friends. Friends who bring the other coffee, babysit when Carisse needs him, friends who have intense chemistry. But Deacon does not want children though he is attached to Sunny. This brings complications, heartbreak, and forgiveness. It's an amazing story. The conversations about being a parent with a child with downs are very important. I loved the narration, of course!

Light and entertaining

I liked both narrators. Having actually male and female voices lends interest and realism. Sweet little story with a message of acceptance.

Amazing

Oh wow. Thank you Penelope Ward for doing such a beautiful job of portraying Down syndrome and what it is like to be a parent of a special needs child. I don’t think I have ever loved anything so much or been able to identify so closely. My beautiful Abby is 9 and I remember having all of those same thoughts feelings and conversations with others.

This book was wonderful!!

Kind of just pushed through this book

I found this book quite cheesy at times and reminded me of a made for tv hallmark movie! So I guess if you like those movies, you will like this book. I’m not a fan of them. Although I did like how they touched on the preconceptions people have of those with Down Syndrome! That was very refreshing!
