About this listen
The newest addition from the author that brought you the Lodestone Series, The Arc of the Universe is sure to delight old fans and convert new ones alike.
The sole survivor of a fleet of colony ships wakes up in a featureless room. His only clue to his surroundings is an ever-changing window.
Is he dead? Is he dreaming? Or is he the subject of some bizarre experiment...?
The Shades is the first volume in a four-book epic that will transport you to worlds as diverse as Nemazi--a desert planet wracked by storm fronts of fractured time; Pann--a layered world where civilizations build atop one another; and The Haven--a lone world in a null universe--a world that cannot exist and yet does!
From the mind of indie sci-fi author Mark Whiteway--who brought you the critically acclaimed Lodestone Series over six thrilling books--comes his latest addition to the sci-fi world.

“This plot is quite exceptional and it exceeded my expectations. Quinn is a strong character. Readers will love him because he’s caring and strong, yet vulnerable—a compelling mix. Conor is underplayed beautifully. The action scenes move the plot along beautifully and all of the scenes are captured with great visual quality. I knew exactly where I had stopped reading and it was easy to pick up and to lose myself in the story-line again, and this is also quite telling. An excellent book.” (Annette Young, The Creative Competitor)
“Whiteway’s writing is highly visual and not overly cluttered. The world building and surroundings are presented in ways that are easy to understand, even for people who don’t usually read science fiction. Familiarizing the reader with this new environment is where the author shows his talents.” (Kathy’s Book Reviews)
“The attention to every detail in this book is an amazing job by the author. You think you have the answer, and it is changed by a simple word or two. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the author takes a turn and you are back to square one. Character development is brilliant. The author is one of the best Science Fiction writers of our time.” (Sandra Heptinstall, Midwest Book Reviews)

Intriguing
Does the Arc of the Universe bend towards justice? Maybe this book series will let us know.
This first book is very intriguing. A fascinating plot with a complex set of characters and descriptions that are all clearly enough explained that I was able to follow it on audiobook. The main character is very relatable and likeable, as indeed are some of the other-worldly characters.
Thr narrator voice is very clear and pleasing to the ear. Variations for character voices are distinctive in a subtle way.

Kept Me Guessing
So, I am not a sci-fi reader. I will read them, but usually, there is a romance concept or some sort of fantasy. This had me hooked from the start. Perkins' voice draws you in and makes the story flow. A storyteller he is. The story itself is well written and keeps you entranced and waiting for the next moment. Quinn has all the best intentions that I think we as human species value so much, which makes him so intriguing. With us as readers/listeners wondering if we were in his shoes, what would we have done. I can not choose a favourite part. Each part needs the other. However, now that book one has ended on such a cliff hanger, I must jump into the next round. I have a feeling I am going to devour this series and be left wanting more.
