About this listen
From the star of the hit Netflix series The Duchess comes a brilliantly funny, fiercely honest, and dangerously astute handbook of life instruction.
"I’ve come to accept that being audacious is a gift I can’t escape."
People "know" my on-stage comedy persona or my scripted ballsy characters and wrongly assume that I must stomp around all day in designer dresses eviscerating those who dare to cross my path. But mostly, I’m just sitting eating pickles and being nice to some dogs.
Whatever strangers think of me is fine with me. How audacious is that? I can always take a joke; I don’t waste time worrying about things I can’t control. I embrace the reality that you just can’t please everyone, so you might as well put yourself out there and have a laugh. As my mother always said, "Katherine, if we all liked the same thing, we’d all be married to your father."
I’m often asked how I developed my lurid level of courage and assurance and for tips on how others can match. The Audacity is my chance to share my blueprint for just that. You will learn:
- How To Be the Most Popular Girl in School
- How to Waste All Your Money on Designer Dogs
- How To Attract Toxic Men… AND Keep Them Interested!
- And so much more…
Secrets are my favorite things to be told and I figured I’d better tell a few juicy ones myself, too. Why not? No matter what I do, there will always be something about me that reads as simply, outrageously audacious.

From the macro to micro, Shlesinger tackles it all with her no-bullshit comedic style. Throughout the book, Shlesinger dives from one subject into the next, making her hilarious asides the basis of her stories, much like she does in her stand-up comedy. A hilarious and emotional personal account of the life, times, mistakes, and crippling codependence of comedian, producer, director, actress, and writer Whitney Cummings. Full of intellect, pathos, and profundity, I'm Fine...and Other Lies is, in Whitney's words, her first book, which means her last date. With her signature incendiary edge and self-deprecation, Whitney comes clean about what has shaped her into the trailblazing comic that she is today.

From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. "Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes it as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world.

From a young age, Ed Gamble's immaculate bibs and extremely dirty nappies hinted at his capacious appetite. Before he could walk, Ed already knew that he preferred poached salmon to puree, that celery was a calorie-sapping waste of time, and that mashed potatoes should be made with lashings of butter. Whilst he might ordinarily have been upset by the calls of 'precocious little s--t' coming from his family, he was too busy stuffing his gob and staging rebellions against the patronising list of misery that is a children's menu.

Story
'Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus (mostly top deck, the seat at the front on the right), a double-decker that plies its way from Dulwich, in South East London, where I was living, to where I sometimes work - at the BBC, in the heart of the capital. It's not a sensible way to write a memoir at all, probably, but it's the way things pop into your head as you travel, so it's my way'.

What the critics say
Named a Best Book of 2021 by the Financial Times and The Times
"Katherine is one of the smartest, funniest voices in comedy...an icon of our time. This book is absolutely hilarious, deeply insightful and truly original. You will love and devour The Audacity." (Lou Sanders)
"I am in love with Katherine's writing. The Audacity is exhilarating - fierce, funny and brilliantly written, but there is so much tenderness, honesty and generosity too. I loved every joke but was also deeply moved by its frankness, and the story of contemporary womanhood. It's a book I want to give to every woman I love." (Daisy Buchanan)
"Outrageously brilliant! Katherine's straight-talking, no-nonsense book is the honesty we all need. I'm buying this for all my friends." (Laura Whitmore)

Great Book, and Definitely Does Not Drag On.
I really enjoyed this book and hearing the story of how Katherine found her style. She is a fast reader so it will definitely keep you on your toes and interested. It might have been just me, but I found the humour was stealthy and often found that I was laughing at something that I didn't even know was going to be funny. I think for me, that was the most enjoyable part.
I didn't know who Katherine was before this but afterwards I made a point of finding and watching some of her Netflix specials.

Instant Binge
I promised myself I would pace this out but finished it the day it came out!
I looovveee listening to her weekly(ish) podcast, and this is just an extension of that luxury.
She is so candid, funny and authentic - and it kind of feels like you are having a nice long (one-sided) chat with your best friend.
Her voice is a gift from the ASMR gods, and the pacing and stories she shares are *chefs kiss*
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a laugh, being privy to some truly earnest moments, and coming away with some wonderful little nuggets of wisdom.
Truly a book for the girls, gays and theys, but I would looovvee if more cis/het men would grow up and embrace Katherine Ryan as their lord and saviour.
Anyways I’m obsessed. Listen to it, you won’t regret it!
