About this listen
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.
The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined - every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute...and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.

Editorial Review
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes begins on the morning of the reaping, an event that will decide with tributes from each district will compete in and fight, and will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Hunger Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, and the once-thriving family now lives in a home they cannot afford. Future President of Panem Coriolanus Snow — not the ruthless evil man he soon becomes — lives with his grandmother and cousin Tigris.
Coriolanus hopes for “the odds to ever be in his favour” as he has been given the awful task of mentoring the female tribute from the impoverished District 12, Lucy Gray Baird. Coriolanus and Lucy are now intertwined; every step they take could lead to disaster or death. With Head Gamemaker Volumnia Gaul at the helm and a plot to take the capital of Panem down, there is no shortage of drama.
Francis Lawrence, who helmed the original Hunger Games book to film adaptation on the big screen, directs the major motion picture The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The Hunger Games prequel movie stars Tom Blyth as Coriolanus, Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, Hunter Schafer as Tigris, Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage in supporting roles. Before the film hits the big screen, explore the world of Panem and the origin story of Coriolanus Snow before he was the ruthless adversary to hero Katniss Everdeen.
Featured Article: The 18 Best Audiobook Series of All Time
Finding your next favourite book can be tricky. How do you know which is a winner, or which will fall flat? And then, when you do find an audiobook you love, it's over before you know it. That is why a good series is so important. From fantasy series to trilogies, young adult fiction or a classic mystery series, knowing which set of tales to invest time and sink yourself into is a tricky task. We've curated a list of the best book series of all time, in a variety of genres. Whether you are revisiting old favourites or discovering something new, there is something here for everyone to enjoy.
The writing and wording is smooth and good to listen to. The characters are complex and interesting. This book both haunted me with the dark tones and the way the main character justifies his actions, and left me spellbound with every twist and turn to come. The way the world is portrayed, just as dark as it always had been but more up front about it, absolutely absorbed me into it and captivated me.
I haven’t read or heard a book this good in a very long time. If you’re on the fence about this, it’s a must read in my opinion! Especially if you like the series, it’s an important read about some historical times in the world’s history.
A haunting and complex read

The narration is pretty good on the whole. However, the spoken word renditions of the songs were really bad. I understand that putting melody to original lyrics can be difficult as I struggled with that upon my first reading of the original trilogy.
(Side note: I loved Jennifer Lawrence's renditions of the songs in the movies but didn't particularly enjoy Tatiana Maslany's)
I could understand and justify Santino Fontana's choice of not putting a particular melody into his interpretation of the original song lyrics. Then came the song 'My Darling Clementine'. It sounded like a bad dry-reading of poetry. It took me completely out of the story for those moments.
Other than that, Santino Fontana's narration was good with a decent delineation of the characters' speech so it wasn't hard to follow who was speaking. I appreciated that Coriolanus Snow's 'voice' changed as the character developed. It was a great audiobook and I enjoyed it!
Great prequel
