About this listen

In his teens, Jim Carroll roamed the streets of New York, shooting baskets with some of New York's best "playground" stars, and shooting heroin with some of the city's most memorable street characters. The Basketball Diaries is his chronicle of those years. Written while in his teens, it is a literary tour-de-force and a stunning portrait of contemporary urban street life. The characters and incidents are moving and funny and sad, but always very real.©1963 -1978 by Jim Carroll (P)1994 by Audio Literature Biographies & Memoirs Funny

What the critics say

Taken to a diff. time, to a place I've never seen

A look through a window, at scenery, during a time, most, including myself, have never seen.

A time when a lot of drugs were legal, and a lot more places weren't yet gentrified.

It reminded me of that movie 'Kids'. Except, much better told and written, not as perverse, and more artfully done.

Worth the purchase.

Writer’s voice makes it real

Jim Carroll narrating this really makes the trip through drug addiction and selling his body for the drugs he is addicted to come to life as if he is telling you the story right into your own head.
