About this listen
Swallow, daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them 'til they've time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, 'til the hour. You won't speak and you won't tell, you won't call on heaven or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, daughter. Stay alive.
The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn't speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would sell his soul and lose his son to the sky. My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother's words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free. But freedom will require escape, and I'm a prisoner of my mother's curse and my father's greed. I can't speak or make a sound, and I can't wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love...a bird?

Sweet and Simple
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and am glad I found it. I gave the story line four stars but please don't let that dissuade you from reading it. It is a lovely poetic story with a fairytale romance and set in a fascinating magical world. I'm looking forward to starting the second book especially because Steve West narrates it and his voice is pure sex (which is why I decided to listen to this series). I gave four stars because while I enjoyed the book it wasn't edge of your seat stay up late into the night because you can't put it down. And that's ok, it doesn't need to be. It was nice taking a break from a large fantasy epic just to stroll through a sweet and simple story.
I will definitely check out other books the author has written. I browsed a few titles and am intrigued.
The narrator fits this book perfectly! She captured the emotion perfectly of the main character and really brought her to life. Her male voices weren't great but that somehow gave it more charm. I don't know about others but I find new stories to listen to by searching narrators. I'll search her name in the future when looking for another book to read.
