About this listen

Hailed by the New York Journal of Books as a “fascinating and gripping tale of suspense”.

In a small village in the Laurentians, north of Montreal, a reclusive older woman is found strangled outside her home. Roméo Leduc, chief inspector for homicide, is one day away from his first vacation in years but reluctantly answers the call on the case. Marie Russell lives in the same small community. She did not know her elderly neighbor, and she does not expect to become embroiled in solving her murder. But when a startling new clue emerges, Marie becomes an inadvertent detective. As Marie and Roméo combine wits to find the killer, they are forced to face demons from their own pasts as they confront a case where no one and nothing is really as it seems.

What the critics say

“The setting is the Laurentians, north of Montreal. That leads one to inevitably think of Louise Penny’s Three Pines, but let the comparison stop there. Yes, both are rural and very Quebec, but Lambert is telling a very different story in a very different way.” (The Globe and Mail)

“Lambert will scratch your murder-mystery itch, rest assured, but she resists the common tendency to place the action in a sealed-off world where murder is normalized. The Birds That Stay is fully engaged with life.” (The Montreal Gazette)

author as narrator too

I liked that the author was also the narrator because the characters and dialogue were expressed in the ways imagined during the writing.

Spellbinding Storytelling

I completely enjoyed listening to this book, actually doing so in one-day — unwilling to stop until the story had reached its satisfying-conclusion.
…Well written, and well read!

Anne Lambert is such a gifted writer, who fills her tale with fascinating Characters and Plots —weaving in with them a plethora of amazing-facts about Nature, and historic info; unknown to Me before now.

Thank-You, Ann; I’m ready to start the 2nd book in this series!

Best audible book so far!

Hats off to Ann Lambert! What a great story, read with the voice of seasoned actor and chalk full of mystery. I love a book that’s both entertaining and informative - and this read is just that. Ann’s knowledge of our part of the world is extensive historically, geographically and socially. I also had a biology lesson to boot!
If you want a really good read that keeps you wanting more this is the book for you! It won’t let you down!

Dull

I really tried, but it's too dull and cliche. Every bad thing that can happen to any one, any where, has happened to somebody in this small town. I couldn't get through it.

Too Bad It’s Read by the Author

Maybe she’s a great writer, but I’ll never find out because she’s such a poor reader I couldn’t get past the first four paragraphs.

Incredibly boring

Couldn’t even rate. Quit at chapter 17. Dragged on to that point. There reader was decent, but it was tainted by the poor writing.
