About this listen

Hawthorne approached the Romantic notion of the ability of science to destroy art (or beauty) in the form of fictive "horror stories" of biological research out of control. This story is the best of that group. A devoted scientist marries a beautiful woman with a single physical flaw: a birthmark on her face. Aylmer becomes obsessed with the imperfection and his attempts to remove it via his scientific skills, thus rendering his bride perfect.©1984 Jimcin Recordings (P)1984 Jimcin Recordings Anthologies & Short Stories Classics Teen & Young Adult Young Adult

A bit short and not much context

It's sad that something she viewed as a gift, that made her unique, her husband hated and made her willing to die to be rid of it. The best thing she could have done was to have gotten rid of him.
