About this listen

An audio original novella featuring bestselling author Dean Koontz’s compelling new heroine, Jane Hawk. From the case files of the former FBI agent before she became the nation’s most wanted fugitive - The Bone Farm details a desperate man-hunt for a serial killer before he murders again.

Katherine Haskell, a young college co-ed is on her way back to school, but she never makes it there. Instead, she becomes the latest prey of the rapist and murderer dubbed by the tabloids the “Mother Hater.” He is a twisted soul who kidnaps young girls for pleasure then discards them.

Katherine is missing, but she’s not yet dead. FBI agents Jane Hawk and her partner Gary Burkett must descend into the hell of this killer’s mind to solve the case before it is too late. The question is - will they both get out alive?

Good Enough To Prompt A Series Start

Starting a new Audiobook Series is an Investment: Time, Money, and the All-Too-Often eventuality of becoming disillusioned, realizing it's just not as captivating as you thought, or simply losing interest (I highly recommend breaking series up.. read some other stuff - preferably from a different genre - every couple of novels).
Notwithstanding that issue, I give credit to Audible for offering this short retrospective from Dean Koontz (for Free as part of the 'Plus' initiative). They got me to decide to make that investment.
'The Bone Farm' is less of a "Prequel" and more of an "Introduction" to a fascinating character. This book predates the events of the 'Jane Hawk' story arc (ie. before her husband's mysterious "suicide" and her conversion into a hunted fugitive). This book describes a captivating hunt for abductor/killers from Jane's professional case files as an FBI investigator - familiarizing readers with the character and Koontz's writing style/mood for the subsequent books. The story is brilliantly conceived and executed (immersive plot, breakneck pacing, and great characterization), the dialogue is end-of-the-bar realistic, and the descriptions are macabre and chilling.. this book is reminiscent of the climactic scenes in 'The Silence Of The Lambs'. The writing is strong enough in this tease that I was prompted to download the entire series.

The narration from James Anderson Foster and Elisabeth Rodgers is commendable (excellent timbre, tone, and pacing). I am happy that Rodgers continues for the rest of the series - well done, Brilliance Audio.

Altogether, this short introduction rates 9 stars out of 10 (losing a point for being too short). Regardless, it succeeded in finding a new reader for the series. I look forward to seeing what Mr. Koontz does with this character.

Not believable

Predictable and typical the story could have been good if there was more adversity to the main character. She was too super cop and figured everything out instantly. Maybe a longer story format would ad more flesh and reality

Not bad, but definitely not great

Slow, jumbled start. Minimal plot twists making for a mildly entertaining listen. the performance was good, though sometimes felt a bit lackluster.

Great story, disappointing readers

Koontz certainly knows how to write a villain, or in this case two. And James Anderson Foster did a stellar job with his parts. Elisabeth Rodgers on the other hand was a bit robotic and I found myself tuning out the Jane Hawk segments of the story. I would have preferred reading this, and would have given it a 5/5.

Quick entertainment

This was a shorter story. So if you hv limited time, it’s great. The story was ok - I guessed a lot of it but saying that, it entertained me.
