About this listen
The Bone Flute, inspired by Paris’ cemetery Cimetière des Saints-Innocents, is a gripping tale of greed, shame, and secrets. During a torrential rainstorm in 1780, the dead and partially interred flow into the streets. A grief-stricken flutemaker, finding her little son, Michel, is among the disinterred, provides herself a ghastly remedy.... Burying him again is not an option. In the grip of sorrow, she carves a flute from his remains.
Centuries later, the flute, passed down through generations and then sent to a seedy Paris auction house, falls into the possession of Jaxon Avery. Twisted with thirst for a meaningful life, one far from his former home in Upstate New York, he discovers the magical tones of Michel’s flute and, with it, succeeds in his desire for fame and fortune. Summoned home to attend to his sister’s funeral, the shame of the past and the wantonness of those who reside in the small town threaten to destroy all he has accomplished.
Bryant Rowe, a rogue detective pushing hard to jail him for two murders, must battle his own demons to get what he is after. But small-town secrets never stay silent for long, especially when Magna, the rightful heir to Michel’s flute, comes to town.
With fortunes at risk and old love broken, new passions flare. Graves are unearthed and three readied. Dreams set afire. Is the flute cursed, or are the townspeople hopelessly broken? Will madness of spirit prevail? Rowe craves answers to end the endless dash toward self-destruction and fear...and runs headlong into mysteries he could not have known existed within the murk of shame and substance of more than one bone flute.
