Publisher's Summary

In the spirit of Khaled Hosseini, Nadia Hashimi, and Shilpi Somaya Gowda comes this powerful debut from a talented new voice - a sweeping, emotional journey of two childhood friends in Mumbai, India, whose lives converge only to change forever one fateful night.

India, 1986: Mukta, a 10-year-old village girl from the lower-caste Yellama cult, has come of age and must fulfill her destiny of becoming a temple prostitute, as her mother and grandmother did before her. In an attempt to escape her fate, Mukta is sent to be a house girl for an upper-middle class family in Mumbai. There she discovers a friend in the daughter of the family, high-spirited eight-year-old Tara, who helps her recover from the wounds of her past. Tara introduces Mukta to an entirely different world - one of ice cream, reading, and a friendship that soon becomes a sisterhood.

But one night in 1993, Mukta is kidnapped from Tara's family home and disappears. Shortly thereafter, Tara and her father move to America. A new life in Los Angeles awaits them, but Tara never recovers from the loss of her best friend or stops wondering if she was somehow responsible for Mukta's abduction.

Eleven years later Tara, now an adult, returns to India determined to find Mukta. As her search takes her into the brutal underground world of human trafficking, Tara begins to uncover long-buried secrets in her own family that might explain what happened to Mukta - and why she came to live with Tara's family in the first place.

Moving from a traditional Indian village to the bustling modern metropolis of Mumbai to Los Angeles and back again, this is a heartbreaking and beautiful portrait of an unlikely friendship - a story of love, betrayal, and ultimately redemption.

Excellent story portraying vivid images of the human suffering and grace. I wonder if it is a compilation of many true stories.

Beautiful tale

What a wonderful and also terrifying novel this was. The characters were depicted beautifully and their highs, lows and the prospect of hope were so well shown in this great novel. Thank you to the author, and thank you to the narrators.

A small Insight into one of India's culture.

A modern look into the world of lower caste women in India . This story is remarkable in portraying what one women had to endure and realize how worthless her life is. It is a story of strength women can find in each other and a story of hope.

Compelling story

The story is a normal story of life, mixed with pleasant and more difficult situations but in no way, is it portrayed in a harsh manner. The reading is beautifully done by the 2 readers and enhances the attachment to the story. It is colourfully written, and within reach of everyone.

Modern Slaves Given Names and Stories

The issues related to contemporary sex slave trafficking are explored with depth, honesty and sensitivity through the journeys of the two main characters. There is tragedy but also beauty and strength. I gave 4 stars as in a few instances I found the format of the two points of view a bit disjointed, but this could be due to my lack of concentration. The two narrators were excellent, esp the one performing Mukta. I will experience the stars in a new way thanks to this book. I look forward to reading more from this author and hearing more from

Very good narration

The narration makes this book. I didnt dislike the story but I found the writing too
light, and topic heavy. It didnt work somehow.

Heart wrenching story

This story reminds us of how women get treated, how they are abused and yet there's a still hope... I loved listening to it.

a story that will touch your heart and soul

even though this story depicts a harsh and ugly reality, it shows that hope is an element that can keep us going even in the worst of circumstances.

Riveting

These two girls, women, will forever live in my memory as real people. While telling a story, this book illustrates not just a social construct but all that can be universally good and bad, happy and sad in all of us. The narrators could not have been better as well. At times they drew you in so perfectly that you could almost hear and see the surroundings. This is an amazing book.

Amazing Story

This was an amazing book about what happens in India to many girls and the culture that comes along with it. As heartbreaking and enlightening this book was it’s one of a dark world that still lives in India! A great read about betrayal, friendship and love!!
