Story
With Conan the Cimmerian, Robert E. Howard created more than the greatest action hero of the twentieth century---he also launched a genre that came to be known as sword and sorcery. But Conan was not the first archetypal adventurer to spring from Howard's fertile imagination.

In a meteoric career that spanned a mere 12 years, Robert E. Howard single-handedly invented the genre that came to be called sword and sorcery. From his fertile imagination sprang some of fiction's most enduring heroes. Yet while Conan the Cimmerian is indisputably Howard's greatest creation, it was in his earlier sequence of tales featuring Kull, a fearless warrior with the brooding intellect of a philosopher, that Howard began to develop the distinctive themes and the richly evocative blend of history and mythology .

Publisher's Summary
In a meteoric career that spanned a mere 12 years before his tragic suicide, Robert E. Howard single-handedly invented the genre that came to be called sword-and-sorcery. Collected in this volume are Howard's first 13 Conan stories in their original versions and in the order Howard wrote them. Included are classics of dark fantasy like "The Tower of the Elephant" and swashbuckling adventure like "Queen of the Black Coast."
Here are timeless tales featuring Conan the raw and dangerous youth, Conan the daring thief, Conan the swashbuckling pirate, and Conan the commander of armies. Here, too, is an unparalleled glimpse into the mind of a genius whose bold storytelling style has been imitated by many yet equaled by none.

Astounding experience!
Conan brought to life by Howard and McLaren! I've already bought the sequel and I cannot wait! Never before have I seen Sword and Sorcery in such a light - it can only come from the original!

Solid Conan action!
I wanted some Conan in my life, and the ride to work was the time to get it! If you're looking for Conan, you can't go wrong with any of these audio books. The stories are exactly what you want from Conan, and the performance is very well done. 18 hours of listening to the same person is a bit much, but that's what audio books are. Personally, I'm always hoping for some audio-drama style production values. Just some background music and noise, maybe some different actors for the different characters, those would really liven up these audiobooks especially because it's a collection of shorter stories. But that aside, the narrator did a great job with these great stories, and I'm very happy I bought all three collections!
Also: #Audible1 apparently!

a little dated but enjoyable
This works as a starting point for Conan. It's a collection of stories. Having never read any of these stories before I got a good sense of the world and the character. The epic is strong! A sense of mythic grandeur, adventure, and heroism runs through everything.
I can see how Conan influenced future fantasy work which was interesting to consider. The flip side of that is a lot of the stories feel pretty basic and simple in comparison to more recent stuff in the same genre. You can also see how much things have changed as far as how women characters are written and things like that. Conan as a character is also basically awesome at everything which starts to feel a bit boring and repetitive if you listen to too many stories at once. He teams up with some companions who have more depth as characters from time to time, those were the tales I liked best. It's a good listen but maybe better in small doses.
