About this listen

WARNING: May Contain Werewolves, Egyptian Gods, and the Truth About Human History

A pyramid predating all known cultures appears without warning. Its discovery throws into question everything we know about the origins of mankind.

Inside lies incredible technology, proof of a culture far more advanced than our own. Something dark lurks within, eager to resume a war as old as mankind. When it is unleashed it heralds the end of our species’ reign.

A plague of werewolves spreads across the world. A sunspot larger than anything in recorded history begins to grow. Yet both pale in comparison to the true threat, the evil the werewolves were created to fight.

"It's like Indiana Jones went through the Stargate and ended up in Aliens versus Predator." (One of the author's totally biased friends)

This complete collection gathers all six books and the prequel novella...everything Deathless all in one bundle!

10 Hours In and Conflicted

I really want to love this book, and in some ways, I do. The premise is seriously fun—think Indiana Jones meets Predator meets Underworld. It's got that cool mix of anthropology, paranormal, and sci-fi that immediately drew me in. I mean, werewolves, ancient pyramids, fun science-y stuff?! Sign me up! The world-building is solid, with vivid, immersive descriptions that make it easy to picture every scene. And this novel doesn't shy away from real stakes when it comes to the side characters. People die, and you feel the tension. The pacing is great too, with no dull moments, and it’s genuinely fun to listen to.

As a fellow sci-fi and pop culture nerd, the references were chef’s kiss. I deeply appreciated all of the references and it felt like me and the author were sharing an inside joke. The "AZIZ, light!" shout-out? I about died laughing. As someone who loves The Fifth Element, that little wink to the audience hit perfectly.

But here’s where it gets frustrating...

It’s like Ready Player One but instead of pop culture, it's obsessed with guns and tactical gear. At first, it was kind of cool to see the level of detail, but after the 600th description of a gun’s specs, it started to feel like I was reading a video game manual. Do we really need six paragraphs explaining every intricate detail of a weapon? I’m all for immersion, but it starts to feel like a slog. If I want to watch that kind of content, I can watch literally any Call of Duty, Black Ops, or Valorant streamer.

Another issue is how female characters are written. It’s... let’s say, painfully out of touch at times. Some of the interactions come across as silly or even downright misogynist. And then there’s the problem with the main characters. Blair and Jordan are, for lack of a better term, invincible. Blair never struggles—he’s got an answer for every problem, superpowers for every fight, and new skills whenever the plot demands it. He’s heartbroken for two seconds over Bridget (who is of course in love with two men /eye roll/) only to immediately meet Liz, who is basically perfect. As for Jordan, no matter how much he fails, there’s no real consequence. He just keeps getting more chances without ever really having to grow or change. It takes a lot of the tension out of the story when you know they’ll be just fine, no matter what.

Also, take a shot every time you hear the word "Ordinance"—but be careful, you might not make it through the book!

Overall:
This is a really fun ride with great visuals and a killer premise, but some of the writing feels repetitive and thin in parts, and it kind of feels like a "boys only club" kinda jaunt sometimes. If you love sci-fi, pop culture, and a fast-paced story, you’ll probably have a good time, but be prepared to roll your eyes at the way some characters and details are handled.
