Publisher's Summary

From R. F. Kuang, the #1 New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of Babel, this collection features the novels in her historical military fantasy trilogy—The Poppy War, The Dragon Republic, and The Burning God—a complete epic inspired by the bloody history of China’s twentieth century and filled with treachery and magic.

The Poppy War

A war orphan, Rin earned her place in Nikan’s most elite military school. There, she discovers her lethal, unearthly power of shamanism—and learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive. When an inevitable conflict arises between longtime enemies the Nikara Empire and the Federation of Mugen, Rin realizes her shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity. . .

The Dragon Republic

After committing an atrocity in battle, shamanic warrior Rin is consumed with guilt, an opium addiction, and the murderous commands of the fiery Phoenix god. Channeling her anger against the Empress who betrayed Rin’s homeland, she chooses to join forces with the Empress’s enemy, the Dragon Warlord. But as Rin discovers the true natures of the Empress and the Dragon Warlord, the temptation to unleash the Phoenix’s fearsome power grows—and so does her vengeance. . .

The Burning God

After saving Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress in a brutal civil war, Rin realizes that her homeland’s real power lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation. Vowing to defeat all who threaten the shamanic arts, Rin’s power and influence grows—but so does the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it. . .

“Mixing historical parallels of Chinese history, the themes of war, politics, and colonialism are balanced with terrific, flawed characters and amazing worldbuilding.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Great books!

Full of characters that I loved while also hating. genuinely a great listen, but I'd recommend taking a little break at some point. I binge listened to all three and was a bit burnt out on it at the end.

Incredible story (+ great bundle)

I love this series! It’s so well written. Complex and engaging! Includes mature themes like trauma, addiction, and characters that believe in a eugenics-like beliefs.

Everything

Everything in this is so so good. Finally a book recommendation that doesn’t center a fantasy book on romance. Truly just fantastic storytelling and character building, I’ve never been more frustrated with a character and also rooted for them.

Disappointing

One of the least likeable heroine’s I’ve ever encountered.
Trilogy could have been reduced to one book.
She didn’t learn, grow or evolve until the last 5 mins of the trilogy.
Characters really didn’t grow or evolve. It was just more of the same dramatic dribble for 27+ plus hours.

Finally... a war book with lots of politics

It's gritty. it's gruesome. It's awesome. I loved it. And I finished the complete trilogy. Very well performed.

Outstanding Performance

This was an epic fantasy story that pulls you in and pushes you through right to the end. It was difficult to get through at times due to the graphic violence and events, but ultimately it’s a story about war and the gruesome effects it had on everyone involved. It is well written and the characters are throughly fleshed out.
I will say that I absolutely hated the main character, Rin, from beginning to end. Sometimes less than others, but overall I found her difficult to root for and ultimately insufferable.
I did love the trilogy overall and am so happy I experienced it - even more so as an audiobook. THIS NARRATOR WAS PHENOMENAL. I’ve listed to many audiobooks, and I have to say she was outstanding. I think I got through it more because of her than anything. Her voices and characterizations were top tier. I would listen to any audiobook she narrates without hesitation.

meh, just ok, too graphic for me, stoped listening at the later part of the Poppy..

good performance but the story was just too much gore, and weirdness for mt liking, life is to short to keep listening to story's that don't move or interest me.

Unlikable main character.

I finished all 3 books. definitely not my favorite fantasy series, great world building and overall very cool unique characters. I just have a hard time relating to the main character in any way. Always choosing the path of highest resistance, so many bad choices add up to a character that I basically just want to loose. the whole series is just super depressing, so prepare for your mind to be torn. I regret starting this series, however it did hook me into finishing.
