Publisher's Summary

Summoned from her promising surgical career first to her estranged father's bedside and then to his post as medical examiner when his small town needs urgent help with a suspicious death, Emily Hartford discovers home is where the bodies are in this pitch-perfect mystery debut.

Recently engaged and deeply ensconced in her third year of surgical residency in Chicago, Emily Hartford gets a shock when she is called home to Freeport, Michigan, the small town she fled a decade ago after the death of her mother. Her estranged father, the local medical examiner, has had a massive heart attack, and Emily is needed urgently to help with his recovery.

Not sure what to expect, Emily races home, blowing the only stoplight at the center of town and getting pulled over by her former high school love, now sheriff, Nick Larson. At the hospital, she finds her father in near total denial of the seriousness of his condition. He insists that the best thing Emily can do to help him is to take on the autopsy of a senator's teen daughter whose sudden, unexplained death has just rocked the sleepy town.

Reluctantly agreeing to help her father and Nick, Emily gets down to work, only to discover that the girl was murdered. The autopsy reminds her of her many hours in the morgue with her father when she was a young teen - a time which inspired her love of medicine. Before she knows it, she is pulled deeper into the case and closer to her father and to Nick - much to the dismay of her big-city fiance.

When a threat is made to Emily herself, she must race to catch the killer before he strikes again.

The Coroner, expertly written and sharply plotted, is perfect for fans of Patricia Cornwell and Julia Spencer Fleming.

Adequate Mystery - If A Bit Amateurish

Author Jennifer Graeser Dornbush pens an entertaining story sending newly-minted doctor 'Emily Hartford' back to her home town (Freeport, Michigan) to help solve a crime that her ill father (the local Medical Examiner) can't tackle. The mystery itself - the murder of a State Senator's daughter - is sufficiently interesting, the pacing is a little awkward but timed to ensure maintained interest, and the characters are realistic.
Less fortunately, the relationship exposition is maudlin, the plot turns - while plausible - often feel forced, and the dialogue is a little klunky. Dornbush shows enough promise that I suspect she's capable of high quality fiction
..but this isn't it. The book feels like a first effort.

Reader Sophie Amoss contributes to the "passable" status of this recording - delivering genuinely commendable diction, timbre, and cadence - but slow pacing (listen at 1.20X), "average" voice-acting (her male characters aren't great), and a fairly uninterested overall tone. The narration is definitely professional, but nothing that another reader couldn't have done just as effectively.

As a 'Plus' offering (included with my Audible subscription), 'The Coroner' was a reasonable investment of time. The 5/10 star recording provided a couple of afternoons of pleasant distraction. You're not crazy to spend a Credit on it if you love the author or rabidly consume the genre, but other options beckon.

Predictable

Well, it's two mysteries and a romance. The romance plot and resolution are obvious from the get-go. One mystery is left unsolved (a teaser for a sequel?) And I didn't find much involving about the main mystery. The fact that I listened all the way through says something about my inability to leave things unfinished.

Good, but slow pace

I enjoyed this book and wanted to love it, but there is something off about it that I can't pinpoint that made it kind of boring. Either the story pace is too slow, or the narrator, who I think is great in general, was poorly cast. Overall, it was a good 'plus' listen but wouldn't have wanted to use a credit on it.

Enjoyable story

It’s my first book by this author. I will happily download other books from this author. The narrator was easy to listen to.

An overall good story

There were some eye rolling moments, and talk of a sister when she was little, but not once was she mentioned in present time. That was a gaping hole for me.

What happened to her sister & mother??

The whole family mystery was around the death of her mother, which still went unresolved; and there was mention of a sister that was never mentioned again. I haven't read a book that was so disorganized, and wasn't there an editor on this book?

rotten ending

the narrative was an extremely deadpan voice.
there seemed to be no variation in the tonality of the voice.
the ending is awful.... there doesn't appear to be a continuing book so alot of questions that were running throughout the story were not addressed
not recommended...

So so plot

Not the most gripping plot
I had problems with the constantly misused words during the reading. I don’t know if this was a badly edited book, or the narrator misreading certain words
