About this listen
In the south of France, where hatred simmers in the heat, a man seemingly admired, and certainly feared, drops dead at a dinner party. All of the guests fall under suspicion, including Welsh-Canadian professor Cait Morgan. A criminologist who specializes in profiling victims, Cait sets out to solve the murder - and clear her name. Add to this the disappearance of an ancient Celtic gold collar said to be cursed and there you have the ingredients for a Nicoise salad of death, secrets, and lies.
Will Cait find the killer before she too falls victim to a murderer driven by a surprising and disturbing motive? The Corpse with the Silver Tongue is the first in the Cait Morgan mystery series, a classic whodunit series featuring the eccentric Professor Cait Morgan.

loved this character
I loved the central character in this story and all the twists and turns in the plot. the character of Kate made me think of the likely audience for amateur detective mystery models- midle-aged, single-without-regret well-educated, respected and a litle voverweight. And open to foreign travel a little Adventure and charming men. I will read more in this series

Old-School Mystery- Updated
This is a most enjoyable little distraction - a surprisingly pleasant choice for a couple of quiet afternoons. Cathy Ace's version of an Agatha Christie whodunit - complete with an unlikable victim and a roomful of suspects - very much fits the mould of a 'Cozy' mystery. Ace updates the matrix, however, introducing modern psychological interpretations of motives; including technological advances like the internet & smartphones as part of her plot; and incorporating forensic reasoning. The writing is capable, the suspects are clichéd but realistic, and the plot keeps the reader/listener guessing.
Cathy Ace is also an admirably effective narrator. Authors are intimately familiar with the tone intended in a given piece of written dialogue, but often overestimate their own reading skills. To be sure, Ace's performance is unspectacular (pretty average, honestly), but her diction, timbre, and cadence are actually quite creditable. Audible Studios did well to get the author to read her work rather than insisting on a professional reader.
I very much prefer modern Mystery-Thrillers.. complete with the sex, gore, and expletives that yield visceral gut-punch realism.. but this fun little foray with a frumpy, jaded, misfit sleuth (Welsh-Canadian Criminology Professor Cait Morgan) is undoubtedly entertaining. Any fan of Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, or even 'Murder She Wrote' should be able to get something out of 'The Corpse With The Silver Tongue'.
If - like me - you can get the audiobook as a free offering, why not? If they ask for money for this 21st century family-friendly mystery, however.. give it some thought. It wouldn't be crazy - the book rates 6.5/10 stars - but there are better options available.
