About this listen

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

Excellent, Engaging Narration

Top notch narration, and the sample does not do Bill Homewood justice. Excellent differentiation between characters. Most impressively, Bill has a mastery of French, Italian, and Spanish pronounciations; a large commodity in this book.

fantastic novel, narration issues

This novel was superb. The problem lies in the narrator's wet and sloppy reading.

Very lively recitation

The person reciting brought emotion into the story. This is a complete version of this book and is not abridged. I really enjoyed the whole book and in parts found it very hard to put down.
In addition, the pronunciation of the words in different languages was done admirably.

Long but good

What a nice, long, twisted story! I’d listen again even though it’s well over 40 hours of listening.

Amazing

I loved how the author worked to create distinct voices for each character. It is a great choice!

Incredibly, riveting, suspenseful epic

This 52-hour audiobook is worth every minute! Not for one second was the story slow - it's so engaging and suspenseful, full of utterly wild twists and turns, you just can't stop listening. Probably one of the best books I've ever read/listened to. Highly recommended. I would listen to the whole thing again (or maybe buy an actual book). Excellent narration. You may wonder how a 52-hour book can keep you interested - there are just tales within tales, and back stories and hidden stories that are later revealed, in the complex (but easy to follow) interconnected lives of all these heroes and villains. Bravo, well done Monsieur Dumas!

Great Classical Read

I first read this book as a teenager over 30 years ago and had forgotten the full story, Listening to it being read was a treat as it reminded me of why I remembered loving the book as a youngster. The story is still captivating and the reader did an excellent job. It is a definite must read if you like classical literature.
