About this listen
Marty Strauss, a gambling addict recently released from prison, is hired to be the personal bodyguard of Joseph Whitehead, one of the wealthiest men in the world. The job proves more complicated and dangerous than he thought, however, as Marty soon gets caught up in a series of supernatural events involving Whitehead, his daughter (who is a heroin addict), and a devilish man named Mamoulian, with whom Whitehead made a Faustian bargain many years earlier, during World War II.
As time passes, Mamoulian haunts Whitehead using his supernatural powers (such as the ability to raise the dead), urging him to complete his pact with him. Eventually Whitehead decides to escape his fate after a few encounters with Mamoulian and having his wife, former bodyguard, and now his daughter Carys taken away from him. With hope still left to save Carys, Marty Strauss, although reluctant to get involved in the old man Whiteheads deserved punishment, decides to get involved and attempt to save the innocent gifted addict from being another victim to the damnation game.

Thomas Ligotti’s debut collection, Songs of a Dead Dreamer, and his second, Grimscribe, permanently inscribed a new name in the pantheon of horror fiction. Influenced by the strange terrors of Lovecraft and Poe and by the brutal absurdity of Kafka, Ligotti eschews cheap, gory thrills for his own brand of horror, which shocks at the deepest, existential, levels.

Imajica is an epic beyond compare: vast in conception, obsessively detailed in execution, and apocalyptic in its resolution. At its heart lies the sensualist and master art forger Gentle, whose life unravels when he encounters Judith Odell, whose power to influence the destinies of men is vaster than she knows, and Pie "oh" pah, an alien assassin who comes from a hidden dimension.

A Sensationally Unique Thriller
Clive Barker loves dualism, beauty woven into the grotesque. This twisted tale pushes your perception of life & death and good & evil. The story's landscape is described so richly, you can almost smell the blossoms and the decay. Simon Vance's buttery voice guides you through the twists and turns while bringing emotion and depth to the characters. Additionally, the story had me guessing right up to the last page!

Well read and well written.
Brilliant as are most of Clive Barkers books. It takes a skilled reader to do such a story justice. It is not about the horror but more about the ability to spend time in the characters' minds.

Good ol' Clive
It is a joy to listen to a book so well-written and captivating. Clive Barker definitely marches to a different drummer and I am sure you will agree we all benefit from his unique take on the horror genre. To add to the pleasure of the listen, Simon Vance's narration is, as always, excellent.
